Gift Baskets For All

by Rene A Lacape

You probably know of at least one other friend who is one or you might even be one yourself. Yes, we are talking about the chow-related ‘disorder’ that is sweeping through most developed nations blessed with more than our fair share of good food-the rise of Generation F. ‘F’ for Foodie, that is. Unsure if you are afflicted? There are quizzes you can take to figure it out but why go to all that trouble? The Oxford Dictionary defines a foodie as being ‘a person who is very interested in cooking and eating different kinds of food.’ With the key phrase here being ‘very interested’. So, if you find yourself exhibiting one or more of the following general symptoms, it is very likely that you are suffering (albeit willingly so) from foodie-ism after all.

What do foodies talk about when going out with friends? Try the latest food review, newest recipe or the newly opened French restaurant in town. Foodies love sharing over and over how Aunt Kate discovered hidden culinary treasures while going on a road trip, and how they’d like to do the same. When dining in a new place, they’d love to try out everything on the menu and can’t make up their mind which selection to settle on. What they secretly hope for is to eat like a cow and not gain weight.

The last sentence may be a hint of total gluttony, but if you’ve answered ‘yes’ to more than one symptom, you may well be a foodie or an aspiring foodie. Now we know that for a fact, let’s look at this from a different angle. Chances are if you are a foodie, a lot of your buddies will be foodies as well due to the law of attraction. That just makes the whole gift shopping experience something much more interesting.

Try to control yourself a bit browsing the food aisles, but imagine the great pleasure your foodie friend will get when enjoying the same stuff that you enjoy! All you need is the perfect occasion to go food gift shopping. A friend’s birthday or anniversary is always so convenient. If not, you can justify the food gift to celebrate Christmas or Thanksgiving, and even Labor’s Day if you’re desperate.

Have fun looking through the online and offline retailers to pick out the perfect epicurean delight. There is nothing a foodie loves more than to receive a food basket packed to the brim with his favorite goodies. For those who love midnight snacks, you can mix and match a snack basket full of sweet or savory snacks. If you simply can’t decide which selection is best, try the premium deluxe of jumbo versions. The wide variety will satisfy every craving.

And for your foodie pals whose preferences lean towards gourmet pickings, you can always look at gift baskets that are made up of specialty food items. Whether it be luxurious dips and spreads, handmade chocolates or fine wines, you can be certain that the gourmet gift baskets of today will leave a lovely impression long after the items are safely tucked away in the recesses of their tummies! For friends into more unusual tastes such as that of wild boar bacon, smoked pheasant and goat cheese, more and more e-tailers these days are offering meat and cheese gift baskets that delight even the most exotic of palates.

If your friend is Jewish and is totally crazy about foods, there are kosher food gift baskets that can be given for Purim or in commemorating the Passover.

After much hard work selecting the most delicious foods to add to the basket, all you need to do after the delivery is to await the phone call saying “thank you” and perhaps your friend will invite you over to enjoy the nibbles together. It’s only fair that you accept! Generation F will survive another day.

Digital Camera Lens

by Scott Paul

Nikon revolutionized the SLR market when it introduced D40 in 2006 and the D40x in 2007. The digital SLR camera is compact and one can carry it to places easily. Nikon has slim down its body and has a slightly exaggerated grip handle. But it is indeed very comfortable and easy to hold. Nikon today introduced the new D40 digital SLR camera that’s designed to offer consumers the ability to get higher quality, impressive looking pictures with the press of a button.

While digital SLR cameras are extremely popular among professional photographers, some consumers have shied away from them because they are larger than compact digital cameras and some models can be complicated to the uninitiated user.

Capture NX is designed to appeal to a broad range of consumers. Users with compact digital cameras such as Nikon’s COOLPIX series will enjoy the simplicity of using U Point technology to quickly enhance their JPEG pictures, eliminate any red-eye using the Automatic Red-Eye Correction tool and even resurrect underexposed images with the software’s D-Lighting feature.

Viewing excellence is taken further with an expansive 2.5-inch high-resolution LCD that provides an ultra-wide 170 degrees viewing angle from all directions. Photographers can customize and store up to nine customized options in the D3 and export up to 99 to a CF memory card, enabling photographers to share settings among multiple D3 cameras.

Autofocus can be continuous when the LCD is on or single autofocus is activated by a half press of the shutter release. Focusing can also be performed manually in which case the distance is indicated on both LCDs and can be visually confirmed on the color LCD with the peaking function. Auto focus gets me frustrated at times. It is also a bit heavy after a long day.

On some models, this readout may also be viewed on the LCD screen. Digital SLR cameras are the tool of choice among the majority of professional photographers but some people have found them to be complex or bulky. With the D40x, consumers dont have to sacrifice the quality of their pictures anymore.

The Cha Cha: A Dance History

by Melanie LaPatin

Everyone knows how to dance the Cha Cha, even if they have never danced before in their life. Everyone knows the beat, One, Two, CHA-CHA-CHA! In fact, when it first caught on in America around 1954, it was known as the Cha Cha Cha. The Bobby Rydell song begins, Baby, baby, come on sway me, drive me crazy. Do the Cha Cha Cha. Theres a recent song by David Nash called Cha Cha like Charo, referring to the blonde Latin bombshell known for being unabashedly Latin in all her unbridled glory. Born in Murcia, Spain, Charos real name is Mara Rosario Pilar Martnez Molina Moquiere de les Esperades Santa Ana Romanguera y de la Najosa Rasten and she helped popularize Latin music in the United States.

Immensely popular for the beginning, the Cha Cha is a dance that has never gone out of style and is a perennial favorite at weddings. The dance is very easy to learn, and once you have the basic pattern down, you can use as much of the dance floor ” or as little ” as you like. You can dance it in a crowded room or a wide open space. Cha Cha came from the Mambo, as people began dancing to the distinct background beat. Originally called the Triple Mambo, the Cha Cha soon spun off on its own.

Havana, Cuba was one of the hottest hot spots to go in the 1940s. Sky Masterson takes Miss Sarah Brown to Cuba to impress her and win a bet in the Broadway musical, Guys and Dolls. Tennessee Williams and Ernest Hemingway visited Cuba and the experience influenced their writings. Havana was an extremely popular resort for the rich and famous who could get there. The most famous American dance bands as well as many outstanding Latin orchestras native to Cuba played in the city’s casinos. It was here that the Mambo was born, and the Cha Cha Cha was an offshoot of that dance.

The Cha Cha was originally one of the Mambo moves, where two slow steps were followed by three quick steps, changing weight on each step. This figure from the Mambo became the basic step of the Cha Cha. Given its close association with the Rumba and Mambo, it should be no surprise that the Cha Cha is very similar in style. The feet remain close to the floor as in most Latin dances. The hips move free freely, although the upper body is usually erect and the dancers glide across the floor at approximately 126 beats per minute in 4/4 time.

In 1952, an English dance teacher named Pierre Lavelle travelled to Cuba, and brought his version back to the British Isles. The famous American dance instructor Arthur Murray thought it would be easier to learn if he simplified the dance to a 1, 2, 3, Cha Cha rhythm. Although this amounted to pretty much the same thing, the Cha Cha slowed down somewhat and became a bit more mechanical for Murrays students.

To this day, the Cha Cha has remained one of the most popular dances in competitions and dance halls. Less sensual than the Mambo and less erotic than the Bolero, it is just plain fun to dance. In the words of the immortal Sam Cooke, Everybody loves the Cha Cha Cha!

The Dominator Of Darlington: David Pearson

by Ross Everett

The Darlington Raceway in upstate South Carolina is considered one of NASCAR’s most challenging tracks. It’s shaped like an egg and has earned the moniker ‘the track too tough to tame’. That applied to everyone except David Pearson, who won 10 races and took 12 poles at Darlington. These records will likely never be challenged, let alone broken. Pearson’s ability to get around the track was almost instinctive. In fact, he made it look easy.

David Pearson was born three days before Christmas 1934 in a tough textile town near the North Carolina/South Carolina border called Whitney. His parents both worked in the local mill and did their best to provide. David quit school after the 10th grade and also worked in the mill. He was soon drawn away by his love of fast cars. He bought his own car and began racing at short tracks in the area. He ran his first race in 1952 in Woodruff, South Carolina and won his first championship at the old Greenville-Pickens Speedway in 1959.

Pearson never really sought much more than this local fame and success, but a couple of his friends and some fans had loftier ambitions”they began raising money to buy a car to compete in the NASCAR Grand National series (which was the forerunner to todays Sprint Cup series). With the financial backing from friends and family, David began racing a limited schedule on the Grand National circuit and was named the 1960 rookie of the year. In 1961, he became the first driver to win on 3 of 4 superspeedways in the same year (Charlotte, Daytona, Atlanta). Success beget sponsors, whos dollars allowed him to afford better cars and crew. This brought about championships”he won three Grand National titles in 1966, 1968 and 1969.

In 1972, he started driving for the Wood Brothers in the #21 car that he was to make a legend. In 1973, he won 11 races in 18 starts”an incredible feat even by todays standards. He cut back his schedule in those years to focus on superpeedways. Through the end of the 1970s, Pearson won 43 races. In addition to his mastery of Darlington, he posted remarkable numbers all over the circuit. He is one of two men to have won more than 100 races, and his 105 is second only to The King Richard Pettys 200 wins. Hes also second on career poles (113) to Petty. Head to head, however, he has a slight edge over NASCARs legendary King: in races where he and Petty finished 1-2, Pearson won 33 to Pettys 30. His 11 consecutive poles at Charlotte is a feat that will likely never be matched. Another record that may never be broken is his 18.29% winning percentage, as well as his record of starting from the pole in 20% of the races he ran.

Pearson is alive and well and still lives in Spartanburg, SC. In March 2000, SC Highway 221 through Spartanburg County was renamed David Pearson Boulevard in his honor. He still gets out on the Darlington track a few times a year–impressive for anyone, but even more so for a 75 year old man. And he’s still got the sterling silver hair which gave him his nickname of ‘The Silver Fox’.
