Drawing creativity from your inner depths isn’t always easy when pressured to make a unique Halloween costume. Other times it is much easier to go out and simply buy a costume- leaving you at a touch decision on buying one, or simply saving money and making your own.

You won’t have to speculate long on a costume if you want it to be easily recognized. All you have to do is go through a list of movies and popular individuals in the past year that have had an impact on you. Odds are that others are familiar with it as well! An example would be with the movie Star Trek, released in 2009, that will no doubt have many dressing up as Starfleet members this Halloween season.

Anime is a great source of creativity. Although perhaps more popular in Japan, anime-based costumes are breath taking due to their attention to detail. Often revered as cartoons for adults, anime is bound only by the imagination of the producers of such shows, and thus, the costumes that result can be very flashy. Often times this may be hard to duplicate without much trouble, but it’s worth the effort.

Don’t forget that there are always chains of clothing stores that carry Halloween costumes. You can let others take care of all the work and simply buy the costume outright. It is going to be many times more expensive than what you would pay if you had made the costume, but then again you might not have the expertise, time, or materials to do that. Rent-a-Kid: While the head of an orphanage takes a holiday, dad Nielsen takes over with a plan to raise money by renting out kids. While unsurprising, this stupid premise is surprisingly effective. Eventually 3 youngsters are rented by a hip ’90s couple considering adopting. A respectable family flick. Cast includes Leslie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Matt McCoy, Sherry Miller, and Amos Crawley. (89 minutes, 1995)

Rich in Love: The individuals behind Driving Miss Daisy have taken Josephine Humphreys’ novel and tried to knit another evocative Southern story but they don’t really triumph, although there are numerous fine scenes. The film is based on a child trying to keep her family together. Amid the members are her idle dad (another awesome Finney depiction), missing mom, and nutty sibling. Cast includes Albert Finney, Jill Clayburgh, Kathryn Erbe, Kyle MacLachlan, Piper Laurie, Ethan Hawke, Suzy Amis, and Alfie Woodard. (105 minutes, 1993)

Digby the Biggest in the World: Meager comedy fantasy regarding fluid Venture X, which causes sheepdog Digby to grow to large scales. Poor visual effects, too. Cast includes Jim Dale, Spike Milligan, Milo O’Shea, Angela Douglas, and Norman Rossington. (88 minutes, 1974)

Red: The last film in Kieslowski’s “3 Colors” trilogy which, like Blue and White, might stand alone with its self contained tale. Fashion model Jacob meets upset, retired judge Trintignant accidentally, then creates a relationship with him and enters his cloistered, secret life. Set in Geneva, this is a story of a few entangled lives. Cast includes Irene Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Frederique Feder, Jean-Pierre Lorit, Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, and Benoit Regent. Foxtrot: O’Toole and his spouse escape Rumania in the late 1930s and shelter on an island heaven to hide from a world getting ready to explode into battle. Shallow, unsurprising drama; filmed in Mexico. Cast includes Peter O’Toole, Charlotte Rampling, Max von Sydow, Jorge Luke, Helen Rojo, and Claudio Brook. (91 minutes, 1976)

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe: This is a witty re-creation of Lily Tomlin’s 1985 one female Broadway show. Her characterizations run the gamut from box woman to juvenile delinquent to New Age Lady, with much of the material in a feminist vein. The show stars Lily Tomlin obviously. (120 minutes, 1991)

Man of Iron: The somber account of Germi, a railroad architect, whose life takes a catastrophic turn, influencing his entire family. Cast includes Pietro Germi, Luisa Della Noce, Sylva Kascina, and Carla Giuffre. (116 minutes, 1956)
