Las Vegas Gets Ready For Maaco Bowl Las Vegas
This year when college bowl season kicks off, the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas will once again take the field at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kicking off on December 22, the game seats 40,000 fans enjoying the unique atmosphere of a college football bowl. The Maaco Bowl Las Vegas, formerly known as the Las Vegas Bowl, usually picks a team from the Mountain West Conference and a team from the Pac-10. The MWC team is usually the conference champion unless that team qualifies for the BCS.
The Maaco Bowl Las Vegas has been around since 1981, when it was first introduced as the California Raisin Bowl. The bowl was played in Fresno, California until 1991, when it was moved to Las Vegas and renamed the Las Vegas Bowl. In 1995, the first-ever overtime college football game was played in the Las Vegas Bowl when Toledo defeated Nevada 40-37. The following season, overtime was adopted for the regular college football season.
BYU has appeared in four Las Vegas Bowls, more than any other team. Although a few other teams have multiple appearances in the bowl, no team has ever won the game more than twice. Since this year’s game is slated to feature a team from the strong Pac-10 against the likely MWC conference champion, the game is a good bet to be a competitive one.
The events for the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas start as early as October, with the VIP Community Kick Off Luncheon on October 1st, and then takes the celebration to the links with the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas VIP Golf Outing on October 22nd. The festivities kick into high gear after December 10th, when the selected teams attend the Team Welcome … Media Conference at the ESPN Zone. The Welcome Reception takes place on December 19th at the ESPNZone and the Mirage features the Terry Fator Show on the same day.
On Sunday, December 12, Kids Day will be held for all of the visiting fans and their families, along with the luncheon and then a visit by both teams to the Sunrise Children’s Hospital. Fans will then gather on December 21st at the world famous Fremont Street Experience to enjoy a pep rally, and on same day there will be a Kickoff Luncheon at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which will also host a Cheer Clinic. The Kickoff Media conference will also be held at the conference center. Then as a culmination of the pregame festivities, the Bud Light Pre Game Tailgate Party will kick off at the stadium.
There is no other aspect of college football more discussed than the bowl system of the Division I schools. Many fans would like to see the current bowl system replaced with a playoff system where teams would be engaged in single elimination games to determine the eventual college football champion, while many others like the bowl system. Even though many arguments have been made for both sides, the college bowls are always a lot of fun and a nice reward for winning programs and their fans.
