One of the best ways to improve your roleplaying skills in D…D is by creating a better character background. Creating a better D…D character background will give you, and your Dungeon Master, more opportunities and character hooks for roleplaying. Here are a few tips on how to create a better D…D character background by using easy to create plots hooks and personality traits.

Decide on one thing that your character would lay down his life for. It may be something noble, or it may be more self-serving. But pick something that your character would, under any circumstances, fight to the death over. It could be that anytime someone steals something from him, he will go to the ends of the earth to track them down and make them pay at any cost. Or, it could be that whenever his homeland is disrespected in conversation, he just cannot let it go. Whatever it is, choose this one carefully as it will turn out to be an extremely important part of your character.

Decide on three things that your D…D character will always fight over. Maybe he has an unrelenting hatred for trolls and whenever he is near them he must find them and attack them. Or, maybe whenever he encounters citizens from a small, secluded town he feels compelled to fight them over past wrong-doings. Choose three possible situations or trigger mechanisms that your character will fight for.

Choose one thing that your character absolutely fears. This fear is something that will drastically alter how you play the character when he encounters this fear. It could be that the character has a fear of the open sea and will absolutely not travel on boats. Or, maybe he has a fear of fighting in high areas, like on a large bridge or in an open tower.

Choose one characteristic that defines your character to other people. Perhaps the primary characteristic you choose is benevolent. This character gives money to the poor when he can. He also lets defeated enemies leave the battlefield without dying if they fought honorably. A character with a vengeful characteristic would be more inclined to remember those that have defeated him and plot their demise for a later date. A vengeful character rarely ever lets acts of transgression towards him pass.

Decide on one supplementary character that is somehow connected with your character and very important. For example, perhaps your character is a distant relative of the king of a foreign land. Although you’ve never met the king, you bear the same last name and if you really needed it he may help you. Or, you might be the enemy of a powerful politician. You could have spoiled his election one year by casting light on misdeeds he had done, and he has still not forgotten of this.

With these seven different characteristics, one thing that you will die for, the three things you will always fight for, and one thing that you are afraid of, and one characteristic that defines your personality, and one character that is important to you, you’ve instantly created a small amount of background, personality, and a play style for the characters. Answering these questions for your character dramatically increases the chance for fun and dramatic roleplaying opportunities in your game, as well as starting the foundation for your D…D character background.

The Odd Couple (1970-1975): The show that asked if “two divorced men (could) share an apartment without driving each other crazy” answered the question with as much hilarity as the preceding play and movie, earning Emmys for stars Tony Randall as neat freak Felix Unger and Jack Klugman as proud slob Oscar Madison.

Get Smart (1965-1970): Forget the cell phone: Maxwell Smart, aka Agent 86, had a sole phone, his shoe-set rotary dial; it was just one of the gadgets that helped the bumbling spy save the day after nearly ruining it every time. He also relied on help from comely Agent 99 and the patience of The Chief in battling KAOS.

The Bob Newhart Show (1972-1978): In the sitcom that introduced laid-back, sarcastic Bob Newhart, he played a mild-mannered shrink who was the perfect foil for his sassy wife, neighbor Howard (whose “Hi Bob!” greeting led to a drinking game) and prickly patient Carlin.

I Love Lucy (1951-1957): A comedy so classic it still goes down as smoothly as a bottle of Vitameatavegamin, the first major TV ratings hit owed its success to Lucille Ball’s gift for physical comedy, whether re-enacting the Marx Brothers’ mirror scene with Harpo, wrapping candy with Ethel or selling that “health” tonic.

M*A*S*H (1972-1983): From Hawkeye’s womanizing to Klinger’s obsession with getting a Section Eight, a constant barrage of wisecracks and juvenile pranks was just what the doctor ordered for these Korean War army surgeons, whose gallows humor was the only way they, and viewers, could deal with the traumas of war.

Cheers (1982-1993): The Boston gang gave us not only a seminal workplace sitcom, but also one of the best TV romances ever with baseball pro-turned-bar owner Sam and snooty “student of life” Diane, and one of the all-time greatest ensemble casts in know-it-all Cliff, beer-lovin’ Norm, gold-digging Rebecca and naive Woody.

This has been a wacky week in the news world, thanks to the crazy story of the Heenes. It all started with a police report that stated that their youngest son Falcon had been flown away in a flying saucer that the family had built.

What made it all even odder was the fact that this balloon resembled an alien spacecraft, as it was built in the mold of a flying saucer. It quickly rose thousands of feet into the air, and authorities frantically chased it down, trying to save the boy’s life.

Amazingly, the saucer had a soft landing onto the ground but people were still naturally worried and fearing the worst. Things took an even more interesting turn when Falcon wasn’t actually inside the saucer. Very shortly thereafter, the family alerted authorities that he had been in the attic all along.

During an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN later that night, Falcon let something very interesting slip out – that he had been hiding in the family attic “for the show”. The Heenes quickly looked panicked and on edge after Wolf Blitzer questioned the family about this little slip-up.

Everything then took a turn for the worse and it became obvious that the entire incident was a staged one. The public had been taken for a ride by the Heene family.

Their 15 minutes of fame came at a big cost though, and someone has to pay the price for it.

Having cost authorities boat loads of money, scaring a nation, and playing around with our emergency response system, there are criminal implications that come with this behavior.

Criminal charges are expected to be filed shortly, and with good reason. This behavior was fraudulent and deserves the appropriate punishment that typically goes with that behavior. I have to feel for the innocent kids for having a set of low life parents.
