Does Poker Exist in Fine Art?

by Thomas Kearns

Poker fans may enjoy collecting Poker Art, and there is a large enough industry churning out anything from Super Mario chip art to stylish monochrome photographs with titles such as Gunslinger and No Chance. Most of it, however, is primarily commercial products, with little or no nuance to entice the eye of a connoisseur.

A general interest for the serious poker player, with an eye for the game’s complex aesthetics, may be poker in when he is not busy challenging a worthy rival art. Does good art which is significantly related to poker exist?

Worthwhile references to the game in art are rare despite its immense popularity. With the elite pride of the devotees of some wonderful esoteric practice, they are cherished by some admirers. To my knowledge, poker in music features mainly in modern compositions, but for its expression in sound there does not seem to be much possibility. Video usually accompanies the more successful efforts, and these are restricted to MTV clips. References to poker in songs can be found although these being composed by well meaning fans or even by poker pros that are not that great with words or music, are offered with mostly half-heated solace.

The most significant poker-inspired artwork in music I am familiar with, and one which by its nature ideally fuses music with visuals, is The Card Party: Ballet in Three Deals, first danced by Balanchine’s American Ballet Ensemble. Music by Stravinsky, who enjoyed poker as pastime, it is one of the rarer curiosities poker admirers might want to see, though it is more fanciful than accurate in representing the process of playing cards.

Dogs Playing Poker by Cassius Coolidge is one of the most obvious examples in painting form. There was an order for nineteen commercially oriented paintings using anthropomorphized dogs and these were only part of the order. Nowadays, the general concept of cigar-smoking canines around a table in a dim-lit club that is more iconic than the original paintings.

Many works of art, in fact, tend to stylize poker and card games in general, blending them with fantastic themes. Alice in Wonderland would be the most obvious example. Alexander Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades is one of his most famous stories. It depicts a player who heard about a card trick from a friend and is desperate to learn it. The story begins as realism and culminates as a sort of card-game horror. An old woman guarding the secret is threatened by the man who desperate to learn the secret, threatens her with an unloaded pistol which unintentionally causes the woman to die from fear. Her corpse glares at him after opening its eyes at the funeral, then at home he is visited by her ghost which tells the secret. In the first game the man’s possessions are double. While playing another game the man knowingly holds an ace but appears to have played a queen causing him to lose everything. After being committed to an asylum in room seventeen he raves, “Three, seven, ace! Three, seven, queen. There is a BAFTA-nominated 1949 fantasy horror adaptation of the story by Thorold Dickinson for the film buffs.

Though not necessarily more accurate, poker tends to be criminally realistic in film, from Cincinnati Kid to Rounders with Edward Norton and Matt Damon. Rounders did moderately in the box office but because of its decent depiction of the playing process it has become a cult film. Martin Scorsese gave us a memorable sequence in Casino, three years earlier, where by means of a hammer and De Niro’s poker-face threats a young pair of con poker players are expertly detected and deprived to cheat in any near future.

A beginner while shopping for an acoustic guitar for the first time has to consider a lot of things. She or he has to make your mind up on the suitable guitar. Determine imperfect ones can save countless headaches, that include finger aches.

The body of an acoustic guitar is created of principally the identical sort of hourglass shape. However in several cases, there are some variations. You see these guitars varying in size, color, design or wood-sort along with additional features.

Some acoustic guitars are so very little that they?ll fit into any mid-size hiking backpack. Like most alternative musical instruments, guitars can have pretty wide price range. But relating to other typical instruments, you?ll get only what you?re paying for – significantly after you are buying new.

There are real variations between finding a discount deal and cheap one. But whether a guitar enthusiast buys a brand new or a second user one, may be set by lots of private factors, which include budget, and standards on vantages or disadvantages.

But the fact here is that when someone buys new, this will award him with a useful warranty. The buyer may also qualify for a affordable come back period, providing the acoustic guitar fails to satisfy the standards of the buyer.

In usual situations, second-hand guitars might sometimes be bought cheaper. These guitars have already spent their ?break-in? stage. Guitars that are built commercially are resultants of mass manufacturing.

On the other hand ?Custom-made? acoustic guitars are made to order and made to consumers? specifications. Understandably, only a extraordinarily skillful guitar maker does the job. Consistent with the cost of custom-built acoustic guitars, their costs might also vary considerably.

It really all depends on how skilled the crafts person is. But despite all that, custom-built acoustic guitars are just about costlier than the ones that are commercially built.

But since custom-built acoustic guitars are distinctive, it isn?t very rational to check their values with commercially designed guitars.

In the past you had to go to a store if you wanted to rent or buy a movie. The next generation it seems will be getting their movies from movie downloads, avoiding any trips to the store. You can get virtually any movie you want with a good movie download site. Here are some examples.

A Cry in The Dark: The amazing true tale of Lindy Chamberlain, an Australian female implicated of killing her infant, in spite of her claims that the youngster was taken by a dingo (a wild Australian dog). Cast includes Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck,Minnie Driver, SteIlan Skarsgiird, Casey Affleck, and Cole Hauser. (126 minutes, 1997)

Hollow Man: Sebastian Caine is working on a top-secret assignment for the U.S. government. He is trying to unlock the keys to human invisibility. As perfect stage for Roberts’ charms and as love tale it has its good moments. Cast includes Julia Roberts, Scott, Vincent Donofrio, David Selby, and Ellen Bursty. (105 minutes, 1991)

Suicide Kings: A group of desperate kids kidnap a slick underworld mob boss and keep him prisoner to boost leverage in the kidnapping of Thomas’ sibling. IPhone Gets Rock Band Game With Amazing Visuals

by Eric Meister

Across the nation almost everybody knows the popular music game by the name of Rock Band. Now it has been released into the App Store by Electronic Arts. The iPhone version sports near console quality graphics, a nice selection of tracks, and great controls. Rock Band thrills to soaring levels.

Rock Band offers three modes of game play: Quick play brings 15 built-in tracks to your fingertips; World Tour takes you through a fun-filled trip to multiple cities; lastly, Multiplayer allows a meet up with friends online or over Bluetooth and rock it out party style. Tracks are arranged according to difficulty level. While some songs are pretty easy, others reach a range or practically impossible. After a song is picked, players can select the instrument that they want to play with. Drums, bass, guitar, and vocals are all present to choose from. Every song has its own difficulty levels (easy, medium, and hard) and tapping challenges increase relatively. Players will travel throughout the world in World Tour mode. Boston is initially unlocked while New York, Seattle, Paris and Moscow will need to be unlocked as the tour progresses. If players have a Facebook ID, Leaderboards are available to peruse. Online play gives an experience for multiple players who can play the same song using different instruments, although not at the same time. Once each player completes the track, their respective scores will be combined to create a final score. Bluetooth grants a real-time multiplayer experience which is a lot more fun. Achievement statistics are accessible in the World Tour menu.

Graphically, the game is very impressive, even on the small screen of the iDevice. Bass and guitar require you to tap on pick-shaped spots at the bottom of the screen as notes stream vertically down a fretboard. Band animations play in the upper part of the screen. Tapping as the “notes” cross the target mark will earn you points and keep the song in tune. If you miss notes, the instrument sound will drop out and you’ll hear pick scratching noises. Long streaks of successful notes earn multipliers and greater points. Flicking the iDevice at the appropriate time puts you into overdrive. When using drums, you’ll still see notes streaming down a fretboard, but you’ll be tapping objects that resemble drums at the screen bottom. Missing notes on drums results in drumstick sounds. Vocals are a bit different. You’re still required to tap, but the notes stream horizontally across the screen. If you miss enough notes, the song will stop completely and indicate that you’ve failed.

Sounds, of course, are terrific. There are 20 CD quality songs of a good variety, including songs from bands such as Blink 182, Foo Fighters, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Motorhead, Joan Jett, All-American Rejects, Smashing Pumpkins, and more. There is a music store available in-game that allows you to purchase pairs of songs for $0.99. Controls utilize tapping, with the occasional flick for overdrive. In our experience, the controls work flawlessly.

Rock Band offers great replayability as its super difficult to make it through any of the songs without missing a tap or two. This game is simply a blast too! Now, we must say there are similar titles in the App Store like the Tap Tap Revenge series and Guitar Rock Tour. Yet, neither of these have the fullness that Rock Band seems to capture. Additionally, they are all a little too forgiving in our opinion. If you are looking for the most demanding tapping experience, Rock Band is our AppSmile team choice. With a $9.99 price point, Rock Band will set you back more than the competition. Yet, it’s definitely worth the extra cash. Rock Band is a hard rockin’ app that shouldn’t be overlooked!

Wedding Digital Photography – Tips To Make Your Pictures Better

by Vince Terry

So you’ve been asked to take the photos at your friend’s wedding. You’ve tried to persuade them to hire a professional, but they are happy with you. Don’t panic, they asked you because they like your style. Wedding digital photography is no different from other photography, but there are a few things you need to consider when planning for the big day.

A simple start to make the best of the day is to ensure your camera is silent. No electronic beep in the middle of the ceremony will make any picture better. You just need to turn the beeps off on your camera.

Take more photos. A perfect moment will only happen once so don’t stint on the number of photos you take, this is one of the occasions where doing less is definitely not wise. And don’t automatically discard shots you don’t think is good enough. Judicial cropping or editing may capture a moment you didn’t expect. The blurred shot of the flower girl may turn out to be an artistic photo. Stand back and objectively (or perhaps subjectively) evaluate each shot for its own merits.

Be prepared! Make sure you have spare batteries and multiple memory cards. Know the wedding venues and times. Check out places where you will be able to stand during the ceremony. Think about the shots the bride and groom will want of their big occasion and how you can move between them during the proceedings. The same applies to the reception venue. It is important to know where the speeches will be given and where the dancing will take place. When checking for locations for posed shots think about the background and places you can get good group shots of the entire wedding party.

Be comfortable with the operation of your camera. A wedding is a busy event and at times a quite stressful one. There will be little opportunity to repose or re-shoot if you hesitate with a shot. One option to reduce stress on you the photographer is to have an assistant. This could be someone nominated from the happy couple or someone you organise yourself. This person can spend time rustling people into groups, setting up shots and generally keeping things moving. This will leave you free to concentrate on the wonderful and flexible shots that come from wedding digital photography.

Practice using continuous shooting mode. This allows you to capture scenes in a series of shots. You’ll increase your chance of getting a proper group photo where everyone has their eyes open at the same time.

Weddings are a celebration. Make sure you cover off the tips above and your contribution to the day will be priceless.

Michael Jackson: This Is It

by Tommy Morais

When Michael Jackson died on June 25th 2009 it seems a part of the world died with him. It made many people sad all over the world and it seems that for once everyone was being nice to this man who had always been abused by the Medias; journalists, interviewers and others. When I heard of the “This Is It” movie concert I didn’t know what to think. I knew it was rehearsal footage from the 50 concerts he was to perform at the O2 arena but I didn’t know what was going to come out of it or what they were going to do with it. When I saw the trailers I knew I had to see this and that “This Is It” was going to be something special like I’ve never seen. And that’s precisely what I got, I even bought my ticket in advance for the movie and feel like it was much worth it.

It amazed me how good MJ still was, the dance moves were great and fascinating to me. He was clearly the one in charge of the whole thing. He gave precise instructions of what he wanted, made sure everything was right and did everything that needed to be done. The film shows just how much Michael was respected, there were parts of it where they asked him if he wanted anything or what he thought and if he liked something, it seems no one assumed anything at all. When he talked the crew would listen and he asked things in the nicest way, never to hurt anyone. There’s not a part that doesn’t make him look like the nice guy he always was. There are mixed feelings about him after all the bad things that have been said about him but after watching this I don’t know one could possibly believe them.

To be honest I loved every minute of it, every song was special and was great to watch. Right from the beginning of “Wanna Be Startin’Somethin’” it was amazing. No matter how many people surround him he’s always the one who does things better than anyone else and the one you’re watching. This Is It was really a unique experience, I felt they chose the right footage parts for the movie and made him look great in every sense. They could truly have messed things up but they didn’t and came out with an amazing documentary, it’s sort of a testament to his fans, it’s just very special. I really liked the Thriller 3D part, it was a 3D video shoot and afterwards you see MJ coming out onstage from a spider, the show would have looked awesome. They Don’t Care About Us was amazing, The Smooth Criminal part was very interesting, so was the Earth Song which had a beautiful video of a little girl in a forest, waking up to see that all of it has been destroyed. I won’t go further but every song had something about them.

The stage show would have been grandiose, the fireworks, the “fireball” (quite impressive I won’t spoil anything), pyrotechnics, the videos that accompany the songs are all very impressive. This could very well have been the best show ever had he lived to perform them. In the end I was quite amazed by the 1: 48 minutes I watched, I can’t wait to see it again and the message Michael gives at the end is very inspiring. From the auditions of the brilliant performers to the credits with the “This Is It” song I was captivated.

The said special features will feature more of the rehearsal and a two part documentary on Michael’s history and his comeback along behind the scenes. I can’t wait to see more of the rehearsal and hopefully the extras will be great and there will plenty to watch.

It’s hard for me to describe what watching this movie was like and what I felt about it. I know this is rehearsal footage but it’s truly brilliant and while it main not catch Michael at his best it certainly catches him at his most honest. I don’t have anything bad to say about either this movie or the man himself, This Is It is a must see. It doesn’t matter if you watch in its theatrical run or on DVD/Blue Ray when released, this is amazing and his fans just have to see this. I will certainly be amongst those who buy it and watch it over and over again. This man gave his life to music and his fans and I don’t remember where I heard or read this but I do remember that someone said: “He was a gift of god, he was a kind human being who’s been mistreated by many opportunists, he’s been taken advantage of but he was the nicest person and could never harm anyone” or sometime like that. These words are very truthful and really mean something to his fans.
