by Dan Feildman

Anyone who wants to learn how to be a photographer doesn?t have to enroll for many years to get a degree. There are colleges who offer this as one of the subjects which the student may take as an elective.

Can you still learn how to be a photographer being out of school for many years? The answer is yes. The only thing needed is your dedication to learn from the proper techniques and a camera to take some shots.

Some students don?t have to go to campus anymore. There are some institutions that offer distance education. A good example is the New York Institute of Photography.

There are a variety of topics covered in photography classes including: exposure, lenses, the various techniques used to cover different events, journalism and much more. Also, once you are enrolled with a school you will be able to receive free online magazine articles which include information on contests and digital imaging.

Classes are typically comprised of 30 lectures on a variety of topics. You will be introduced to each type of photography genre after which you can choose which area interests you the most. Given that you can do this on your own time you will still be able to keep your regular job and take the classes when it is convenient for you.

Aside from theoretical lectures you can expect a lot of hands on experience. Being able to apply what you have learned through taking your own photographs will be a great measure of how much you have understood and retained.

Online Poker Vs Brick and Mortar Games – What Type of Poker is Best For You

by Thomas Kearns

Since the dawn of the online poker age there has always been the question of which is better, online poker or live games in a casino or card room? The answer is the same as most poker questions…. It depends. While the two generally have the same rules and structure, you are dealing with two very different games.

If its speed and sheer volume of hands that you’re after than online poker is the hands down winner. Dealing, shuffling, counting chips, and collecting cards is all done automatically by the poker room software. A lot of time is also saved by knowing how much money is in the pot at all times and how much money is in each players stack. When you also factor in the clock that is put on each player when it is their turn, you start to get double and even triple the amount of hands per hour when compared to a live game. Another thing to consider is the fact that you can play several tables at a time online. If you are good enough to play six to eight tables at once you may well get 600 or more hands in every hour. Under some conditions you may well end up playing more than 20 times the number of live hands that would be dealt in a similar amount of time. As a skilled player, the more hands you play the more money you make right? The answer again is “it depends”.

Playing live poker has its advantages too. Poker is not all about the quantity of hands that you play. Live poker generally has much weaker opponents than similar levels online. You get a lot of casual players who just happen to give poker a try since they’re already in the casino. You will also get players who are unaware of what hand beats what. These players are just asking you to take their money. Soft players lead to soft games. Ive played in 20/40 limit holdem games in the casino that were much softer than 1/2 games online. These stakes are 20 times that of the 1/2 online game that I mentioned, and you should be able to make a lot of money per hand in these games. So for the winning poker player we would assume that higher stakes means more money to win right? Maybe and maybe not.

The financial advantages to online poker and live poker are different and will be seen differently by different players. But there are other factors that can help us decide if online poker or live brick and mortar games are best for us. Live poker has a social element to it that online games just don’t have. If you want to get out of the house, have some conversation, and possibly sip on a cocktail, than live poker may be much more rewarding for you. Online poker, while lacking in the social aspects, has its own unique advantages. You are able to play anytime from anywhere that you can connect to the internet. You can play in your underwear if you like(if that is advantageous in your opinion). The bottom line is that it’s convenient, fast, and allows you to take advantage of other tools like rakeback, poker software, poker bonuses, and all that good stuff. If you’re looking for convenience, nothing compares to online poker. If its the money your after though, online poker probably affords you more opportunities to pad your bankroll.

So what did we learn from this little discussion? Neither online poker or live poker games are definitively better. It all depends on what you aim to achieve at the poker tables.

5 Unique Ideas for Twilight Party Favors

by Aaron Hu

This fall the sequel to the movie adaptation of Twilight, New Moon, will be released in theaters. The story of Bella and Edward takes a new desperate turn as Bella turns 18. At her birthday a dangerous incident convinces Edward that their relationship can be truly fatal for Bella. So he decides to leave without a trace abruptly ending their relationship. Bella is devastated and only starts to begin healing in the company of her friend Jacob who lives in a nearby reservation. However, Jacob has his own supernatural secret. If you are a fan wanting to host your own Twilight party then you will need some great Twilight themed party favors. These unique and original favors will help to set your party apart from all the rest.

A great favor idea is to use ideas from the novel. For example there are two distinctive cultures presented in New Moon. First there is the Native American culture of Jacob’s tribe with its supernatural origins. Try to find Native American favors that are from the Washington state area and have wolves on them. The other culture is Renaissance Italy. You can try to give items that are either reminiscent of Italy or the Renaissance. To find these types of items the internet will surely be your best bet.

Movie merchandise is another great source for favors. You can give out posters and other small movie merchandise as favors. The theme that will be sure to develop this year is Team Jacob vs. Team Edward. A great idea is to use favors that have images of exclusively either character or each of them with Bella. There should be some items that you should be able to find at the stores. Also look online for unique merchandise. There are some great favor purses, bags, and even letter openers with limited edition stickers that depict key scenes from the movies and some new images from the New Moon movie. These will definitely be highly sought after items at your party and make your event the best of the fall.

You can also use the cover art of the Twilight novels to guide your favor choices. The motif in each picture is a significant interpretation of an element in each novel. For New Moon the image is or red edged Tulips and the original Twilight novel has an apple. Try to look for favors that use these themes. They can be used for candles such apple shaped or tulip scented candles. They can also be applied to stationary or be the shapes of refrigerator magnets with images from New Moon and Twilight.

Try to find favors that play upon the werewolf and vampire themes. For example you can give dog tags with images of Twilight characters. You can also give wolf and werewolf themed party favors. The same can be done with the vampire theme. Try also using images of old movie monster werewolves and vampires for added effect.

Edible favors can also be used. Try to order or make unique Twilight candies and snacks. For example you can use customized molds to make special lollipops or chocolates. You can also give out pouches of red juice as “blood” favors. The point is to use your imagination and knowledge of Twilight to come up with unique items for your edible treats.

Put Your Fingerings To The Test

by Clayton Haslop

If you take just about any passage of music in the violin repertoire and gather five players to play it, chances are you’ll see five different fingerings being used.

However, this may not be the case if those 5 players came from the studio of one teacher.

Now, I consider that I have had four teachers in my life.

As I look back, what strikes me is that two of them tended to have specific fingerings for any given passage, and sought to adjust my technique to accommodate them.

The other two took a very different tack.

In high school I studied with a very gifted Italian violinist by the name of Guido Mansuino. He felt, if you couldn’t play a passage with a given fingering after three honest attempts, it was time to find another way.

Milstein was much the same way.

In the interim, however, I spent three years with Eudice Shapiro at the USC School of Music. Now Shapiro was a truly extraordinary violinist, one of the finest of the 20th century. Yet I would still place her firmly in the school of ‘adaptive technique’, where fingerings were concerned.

And I must admit to having chaffed at the bit in this regard whilst under her tutelage.

It was only when I arrived at Milstein’s door that I again began to feel the thrill of musical exploration – of personal innovation.

And fingerings were a big part of this agenda.

He himself was constantly looking for new and unique ways of doing things; often playing different fingerings in successive performances – he was unrivaled in his ability to do this.

In short order I found myself investigating three, four, or more ways of fingering a passage before coming to one solution allowing for the right musical impact as well as a fluid, facile execution for my hand.

This process fired my imagination to do so.

Admittedly, there are times when your fingering options are limited – you really must rely solely on technique to get the job done.

Yet that’s truly more rare than many violinists realize.

So if you are having challenges playing a passage, stand back and take a fresh look at those fingerings. Chances are, with a little investment of time, you’ll surprise and delight yourself with a much more effective way of getting the job done.

And you’ll actually be SAVING time and effort in the bargain.

The Preacher’s Block Breaker

by Sherman Haywood Cox II

It is time to preach again and you don’t know what to do. Will you Generate effective sermon ideas?

1. Look at the Text through a theme. In this method you look at the text to see the connection to a moment in the life of the church like Youth’s Day or Mother’s day. 2. Examine different perspectives in the text. Here you look at the text from different vantage points in the text.. For example, we often read the story of the Prodigal Son and place ourselves in the position of the son and place God as the father and then we place others as the brother who never left. What would happen if we make ourselves the father? How does that change the story? What if we try to appreciate what the brother who never left actually went through and look at the story from his angle? Doing this can force us to look at the text anew and might help us see different things that we might not otherwise see.

3. Look at the text through a particular doctrine- This is an interesting approach. Often when we seek to teach doctrinal texts we use the didactic portions of scripture and not the narrative ones. But what would happen if we looked at a story with a particular doctrine in mind. What does the story have to tell us about that doctrine ? What does the above mentioned Prodigal son story tell us about say the Trinity. You might hit a dead end, but attempting to find such a connection can help to make doctrines more relevant in the mind of the hearer.

4. Examine what you see, hear, smell, and fell in the text.- Listen to the text and see what images are in the text. What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? How do these things fit with other images in the Bible? What sites and smells are in the prodigal son story? Well we have the smells of the pig pen versus the smells of the home cooked meal. The difference in smell alone might spark some sermonic content. What about what about thinking about what the prodigal son saw on the way back home. What was on the road from the pig pen to home? No doubt it was the same road that he come in on. What has changed so that now the same sights, sounds, and smells that was leading him away from home is now leading him back home? Here we have more thoughts for sermons that come from the sights, sounds, and smells in the text.

5. Seek to understand one of the older texts. – Often we put too much emphasis on originality. instead look at a common text that has been preached often over and over again. What does this text say to us today? There are reasons that many of these texts are common.

There you have it. 5 top techniques for sermon idea generation. If you follow them then you will have more sermons than you have time to preach.

Making Your Own Candles Provides A Nice Personal Element To Gift Giving

by Pamela Yolanko

Making your own candles is an enjoyable activity no matter what your age. It is a fairly simple process than most people can carry out using basic kitchen equipment. The great thing about creating candles yourself is that they can be personalised and made in any shape or size. You can also add whatever colors and fragrances that you like for that extra touch.

Today not all candles are manufactured from paraffin gel. Beeswax and soy wax candles have become very popular over the last decade and for good reason. They are less damaging to the environment as they do not add to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and also they burn much slower. Another factor is that they do not produce large quantities of melted wax that is hard to remove.

When making your own candles there are a few pieces of equipment that you will need. A vessel to melt the wax is essential. Many people use what is called a double-boiler. This is basically a small pot inside a large pot. The outer pot holds hot water and the inner pot contains the wax.

Other necessary equipment includes a thermometer, a scale, an old spoon, and a ladle. A measuring cup is also preferential to ensure you have the right amount of melted wax. But the most important ingredient is of course the wax itself. Which type of wax you use is down to your own preference. Today it is easy to purchase the raw material through the internet if you do not have a speciality craft shop in your neighborhood.

Another essential item is wicks. These are usually composed of braided cotton.

If you want to make a very unique candle then you can choose to add various dyes and scents. These should have been created specifically to be used in candle making as other varieties can be flammable and give off toxic smoke.
