Indie Rock Dominated the Decade
As we close out a decade, it’s safe to say that the rock world was defined by the indie rock movement. What started out at the beginning of the decade on the heels of the success of bands like The Strokes, the White Stripes, and others, has turned into an entire genre all in its own.
During the’90s, it was definitely alternative music that ruled the airwaves, album sales, and filled up stadiums with concertgoers. This past decade, however, things changed during the early part of it. Indie rock became a big thing, and it still is almost ten years later.
With so many bands that were strong at the beginning of the decade still producing quality music, it’s clear that the indie genre is far more expansive than nearly any musical movement we’ve seen in quite some time.
Many might define indie rock as the presence of a band that’s not signed to a major label, but the definition has surely evolved. Take, for instance, bands like My Morning Jacket. While currently signed with a major label, people would still refer to them as an indie rock band.
Most would agree that indie rock bands make their music with the goal of making great music. This is a breath of fresh air in a world that was dominated by songs specifically engineered for top 40 radio for way too long.
Seeing as how things look as the decade comes to an end, there’s no reason to believe that indie rock won’t continue to be the preferred music genre of many music fans. There’s no letting up at this point as bands continue to explore new ways to express themselves.
This is a great thing for music fans, as the wide variety of creative music is really a pleasure to all with an interest in music. It should be interesting to see where things continue to go from here as they evolve.
The last decade was definitely dominated by indie rock. I’d usually wonder what the next decade will bring, but my money’s on further evolution of the indie genre. What a great thing that would be.
