It seems like the decade was just beginning. I can remember witnessing the transformation from alternative rock to indie music as the preferred genre for so many fans, and boy, was it exciting. Since the decade is winding down now, I’d like to take a few minutes to honor the bands that I believe to be the best of the decade.

Let’s take a look at the contenders for band of the decade, and then I’ll give my personal opinion at the end. Naturally, even the nominees here are all subject to opinion and yours may be different.

I can remember the impact that the White Stripes had at the beginning of the decade. Their music sounded much more like Zeppelin than Nirvana, and it was refreshing to hear some new bands with the classic rock influences that I love.

The layered sound that two musicians were able to produce is remarkable, and the band’s success spawned off a handful of other bands whose influences were rooted in garage rock. It was great to hear the White Stripes then, and it still is now.

Next on the list is Radiohead. Many might call them the band of the 90s, but they’ve been just as integral this past decade, further polishing and evolving their sound.

Each Radiohead album has been a unique experience, with innovation being the key factor here. Radiohead sounds absolutely nothing like the band did in the’90s, and critics and fans have enjoyed every bit of the band’s music.

While the White Stripes and Radiohead have been hugely successful, Wilco has enjoyed its own success on just as large a scale. This band has produced a wealth of great music during the decade, and its story is just as interesting.

Just when Wilco’s record label was ready to give up on the band, Wilco decided to turn on its label and release Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, their 2002 album, independently. Everything is history from there, as some of the decade’s best releases were crafted by Wilco.

Having said all that, it’s a tough decision but I think I’ll go with Wilco here.

For hundreds of years, nothing has brought warmth and comfort to homes like a fire roaring on the open hearth. The fireplace has served to bring warmth, light and cheer to the family. If you have a fireplace in your home, then you will need a fireplace screen and fireplace tools. There are a wide variety of fireplace screens and tools that are available in many different price ranges.

When trying to sell a home, a fireplace is often a great selling point, even though most homes today do not depend on the fireplace for the primary heat source. It does not matter if the fireplace is located in the living room, family room or master suite.

Self-contained electric or gas fireplaces can take away a lot of the work and mess associated with a fireplace; however, nothing heats like the traditional wood fireplace. Fireplace tools can help to manage a fire. For moving burning logs and hot embers, you will want to have pokers and tongs. For cleanup after a fire, you will need to have whisk brooms and shovels. To prevent embers and sparks from escaping the safety of the brick, stone or metal portion of your fireplace, and to keep them off the rest or the floor or carpets, you will need fireplace screens.

When choosing fireplace tools, most come in a standard three piece hearth set. This set includes a broom, shovel and a poker. If you choose a four piece set, it usually includes a set of tongs. Most of the sets include a stand or rack to hold the tools. The stand allows the shovel, poker and tongs to stand inside while the broom hangs from a hook in the back to protect its bristles. The rack can be attached to a log holder or to the fireplace its self. It has hooks for each of the tools.

Fireplace tools must be heat resistant, so most are made of steel or iron. Some are coated with brass or copper while others are simply painted black using heat resistant enamel paint.

Log holders can be added to the set. These are available in many sizes and the appropriate size will be determined by the size of the room. A tiny log holder may look silly in a large great room, while some condos will not have room for even the smallest of log holders.

Fireplace tools and fireplace screens greatly enhance the safety of using a fireplace. Pokers and tongs can be used to re-arrange logs that have rolled away from the main part of the fire. The screen can prevent such coals from rolling off of the hearth and causing major damage to a home.

One of the best ways to instantly become the most popular person at any party you go to is by learning a few simple magic tricks. There is something about magic tricks that really impresses people. Maybe because most people love surprises, or we are always trying to figure out how things work. There are several different kinds of tricks you can do.

Probably the most popular trick for beginning magicians to learn is the sleight of hand trick. This is where you misdirect people’s attention, and while they are looking at your right hand, you do something with your left. Pulling coins out of ears, and cards out of sleeves are some popular ones.

Self working tricks are ones that you can do with a deck of cards. These are called self working because they are based on mathematical rules and don’t usually require any planning. Sometimes you have to pre-stack the deck, or put the cards in a certain order. These are easy to learn, but they are usually easy to figure out, as most people know that they are not the sleight of hand variety.

Another kind of magic trick is when you pretend to be psychic. This is when you use simple principles of human psychology to make people you think you have super psychic powers. This really impresses people. Especially at a bar or a party when people may have had something to drink.

And the most difficult, and most impressive tricks are the ones that require props, and even participants. These are the tricks like sawing people in half, escaping from handcuffs, and things like that. These are usually expensive, and require lots of practice, which is why only professionals usually do these.

When you only learn a couple sleight of hand tricks, and a couple mental tricks you can really impress a lot of people wherever you go. People will think you are a mystic psychic with magical skills, and you will always have a crowd of happy people around you.

There are many benefits to buying rare vinyl records. Some of the benefits are financial, whereas other benefits are cultural and historical.

This discussion will look at why after all these years people are still picking up rare vinyl, despite newer and more advanced ways of listening to music.

Appreciation of past technology: Many people simply look at older technology with a romantic feeling for the past.

Hired-To-Kill: A Mercenary poses as a gay clothes maker to spring insurgent leader ‘Ferrer’ from a Latin American jail. His commando squad with six attractive ladies posing as models is impressive. Well generated, although awesomely stupid. Cast includes Nico Mastorakis, Peter Rader. Brian Thompson, Oliver Reed, George Kennedy, Jose Ferrer, Michelle Moffett, Barbara Lee Alexander, Jordana Capra, Kendall Conrad, Kim Lonsdale, Jude Mussetter, and Penelope Reed. (91 minutes,’90)

Lovers: Aristocrat Mastroianni has a fictional spouse; an organ grinder persuades prostitute Mori to “impersonate” her. While it’s not stupid, it’s unexciting. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Mori, Lino Morelli, Plant life Carabella, and Adriano Celentano. (93 minutes,’76)

Flatliners: A group of five medical students start imagining experiencing life after death. One by one, under controlled conditions, they die, and then bring themselves back to life. No one is prepared for the side effects the experience causes them all.

Above Suspicion: WWII is just starting. American newlyweds honeymooning in Europe are enlisted by the US government to carry out an espionage mission against the Nazis. Can the honeymooners succeed? Richard Thorpe. Joan Crawford, Fred MacMurray, Conrad Veidt, Basil Rathbone and others. (1943 Espionage)

Good Guys Wear Black: Norris hops feet first through a windshield and proceeds to rearrange the face of bellman Backus, all in the name of nationwide security. Stupid political paranoia thriller passes time effortlessly enough. Cast includes Chuck Norris, Anne Archer, James Franciscus, Lloyd Haynes, Dana Andrews, and Jim Backus.(100 minutes,’79)

Dracula’s Daughter: A Spanish language adaptation of the terror classic was filmed simultaneously with the Hollywood rendition on the identical sets although much of the orchestrating and camerawork are actually better in this Spaniosh version! Other chief variance: the ladies are outfitted more provocatively. All that’s missing is a performer with the appeal of Lugosi in the lead role. Cast includes Carlos Villar Villarias, Lupita Tovar, Pablo Alvarez Rubio, Barry Norton, Eduardo Arozamena, Carmen Guerrero, and Manuel Arbo. (103 minutes,’31)

No Minor Vices: Arrogant comedy in which stereotypically off beat performer Jordan tries to come between pediatrician Andrews and spouse Palmer. Starts off well however slows down. Cast includes Lewis Milestone, Dana Andrews, Lilly Palmer, Louis Jordan, Jane Wyatt, Bernard Gorcey, and Man Bridges. (96 minutes,’48)

Sugar Town : Entertaining mosaic of LA life characterizing a handful of characters whose lives dovetail: a musician wannabe who’ll do anything to get ahead, an uptight lone lady who allures the incorrect men like a magnet, and a band made up of cleaned-up ’80s stone megastars, to name a few. Tiny, made on a shoestring, although acute and well recognized; excellent cast contains a number of genuine-life musicians. Cast includes Supporter Sheedy, Rosanna Arquette, John Taylor, Jade Gordon, Michael Des Barres, Lucinda Jenney, and Martin Kemp. (92 minutes,’99)

Coming To America: Prince Akeem has come to Queens N.Y. from Africa. Back in Africa, a wife has been selected for him to marry. Instead the Prince comes to America to find the love of his life, and marry her instead.

Barefoot in the Park: A plot less flick in which amusing Neil Simon comedy finds Fonda and Redford newlyweds in a 5 story walk up condo. Redford and Natwick reconstruct their Broadway roles. Cast includes Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Charles Boyer, Mildred Natwick, Herb Edelman, Mabel Albertson, Fritz Feld, and Doris Roberts. (105 minutes,’67)

The Dying Gaul: The mourning author of an auto biographical screenplay becomes erotically intertwined with a smooth producer, who offers him 1,000,000 dollars to produce the venture as long as he makes the gay protagonists straight. In the mean time, he becomes spiritually intertwined with the producers spouse, a prior screenwriter turned housewife. Twists, catastrophes, and fine acting mark this brilliant although thick personality research. Cast includes Patricia Clarkson, Campbell Scott, Peter Sarsgaard, Ryan Miller, Robin Bartlett, Linda Emond, and Jason-Shane Scott. (101 minutes, 2005)

Nuts: Gripping drama in regards to a belligerent female designated an appointed attorney who should fight for her right to stand trial for manslaughter, while both the state and her own parents demand that she’s not in her right mind. Cast includes Barbra Streisand, Richard Dreyfuss, Maureen Stapleton, Eli Wallach, Robert Webber, and Hayley Taylor Block. (116 minutes,’87)

Cry of The Penguins: Will a womanizing youthful biologist find real cheerfulness and redemption amid an Antarctic colony of penguins? Do you care? Famed documentary film maker Amy Dorff shot the intriguing however atrocious scenes of life and mortality amid a penguin colony. Cast includes John Hurt, Harvey Factories, Dudley Sutton, Tony Britton, Thorny Walters, and Judy Campbell. (101 minutes,’71)

Why is it that gaming consoles so expensive? Many consumers have asked themselves this question over the years although they usually will acquiesce and hand over their hard earned money to purchase the gaming console they are interested in. Yet, some may make such purchases with a bit of hesitation. Namely, they may be concerned as to whether or not they are making a good purchase considering the fact that so many gaming consoles end up becoming obsolete.

So, why are they so expensive and can they become obsolete too quickly? The answer to this question is not one that will be found in the pages of any newsstand consumer electronics publication. Yet, many consumers have such questions due to the high cost of consoles and their accompanying games.

Why is this? Just step back and think about it. If you are an older gamer, you will remember the first actual game consoles that came out by Atari. People were amazed and dazzled just by seeing a couple of primitive paddles and a square ‘ball’ moving across their color screens, even though the image was in black and white.

Roughly around this same time, many consumers were purchasing home computers. These computers were really little more than advanced word processors and typewriters and did not have much to offer those looking for something special in a computer. However, when the Commodore 64 debuted, it presented a unique world of floppy disk games which further altered the future of gaming.

Technology began to change and alter in what seemed like an overnight fashion. The Nintendo soon debuted and it was a shocker to most. The world of Super Mario Bros. made its debut and it caught the imagination of gamers everywhere. They would soon revel in the world of the Nintendo and sales exploded.

More and more systems made their debut roughly around the same time. All of these system competed fiercely with one another. Atari was losing ground and tried to keep up but it was quickly fading from the market. Systems such as Intellivision, and ColecoVision had arrived and were doing stunningly well. Out of this new competitive marketplace, it seemed Nintendo, Sega, and Playstation were the real winners since they were a hit with consumers.

Things were also stirring for computer manufactures as well. Their graphics and sound on PC games became better, and people started being drawn back, with more interactive games, and ones that immersed you in a completely different world.

Soon after, the development of the CD game arrived and this was another huge plus. The amount of info capable of being stored on a CD was vast. This further created opportunities for advanced sound and graphics.

Computer and console games seem to go back and forth amongst themselves in terms of their popularity. Now, role playing games have entered into the equation as well. Much of this has become possible thanks to the ability to connect the gaming consoles to the internet. Really, the world of gaming is wide open and the future look bright. After all, it is always constantly evolving.
