The Good Girl: A 30-year-old female who feels her life is at a dead end becomes captivated with a young loner, and ends up setting her matrimony at risk. A rare film that manages to make a shift from comedy to poignant drama, with a denouement that’s almost heartrending-as a result of excellent inscribing and remarkable performing by the leads. Cast includes Jennifer Aniston, Jake Gyllen Haal, John C. Reilly, Zoey Deschanel, Tim Blake Nelson, Mike Off-white, Deborah Hurry, and John Carroll Lynch. (93 minutes, 2002)
Dying Young: Aimless youthful lady replies to a newspaper ad and becomes nurse/friend to a 28-year old rich kid who’s stricken with leukemia. Eventually they fall in love. As perfect stage for Roberts’ charms and as love tale it has its good moments. Cast includes Julia Roberts, Scott, Vincent Donofrio, David Selby, and Ellen Bursty. (105 minutes,’91)
Inferno: American returns to N.Y. from school in Rome to examine the hideous death of his sibling, and finds “sinister moms” wreaking paranormal chaos on both sides of Atlantic. Surreal, spellbinding shocker by Italian terror maestro Argento doesn’t make much sense, but it has a lot of style. Cast includes Leigh McCloskey, Irene Marvel, Sacha Pitoeff, Daria Nicolodi, Eleonora Giorgi, Veronica Lazar, and Alida Valli. (107 minutes,’84)
Say It Isn’t So: Pleasantly un-ambitious Klein falls for the new hairdresser in town Graham only to find out (after having sex with her) that she’s his sister! Cast includes Heather Graham, Chris Klein, Orlando Jones, Sally Field, Richard Jenkins, John Rothman, Brent Briscoe, and Sarah Silverman. (96 minutes,’88)
Educating Rita: This is an amusing adaptation of Willy Russell’s level play in reference to a youthful working class spouse who desires to better herself, and chooses boozy professor Caine as her mentor. Walters is phenomenal in her film debut performing her role and Caine has one of his best roles as her mentor. Cast includes Michael Caine, Julie Walters, Michael Williams, Maureen Lipman, Jeananne Crowley, and Malcolm Douglas. (110 minutes,’83)
Chicken Every Sunday: Carefree turn-of the century Americana in reference to get-rich-quick hopeful Dailey and his clingy spouse. Cast includes George Seaton, Dan Dailey, Celeste Holm, Colleen Townsend, Alan Youthful, and Natalie Wood. (91 minutes,’48)
Lust for a Vampire: Carmilla, the seductress from The Vampire Lovers, preys on young students at an all girl school. Third-rate terror film is very weak. Cast includes. Ralph Bates, Yutte Stensgaard, Barbara Jefford, Michael Johnson, Suzanna Leigh, Mike Raven, and Christopher Neame (95 minutes,’71)
The Lost World; Jurassic Park: John Hammond has learned to bring dinosaurs back to life from their DNA. After an attempt at marketing viewing these dinosaurs goes terribly wrong, all the animals are killed and the island closed. The problem is that something has survived.
Rhapsody in Blue: Hollywood biography of George Gershwin is largely fiction, although comes off better than most other composer biographies, seizing Gershwin’s excitement for his work, and some of his central conflicts. Cast includes Robert Aida, Joan Leslie, Alexis Smith, Oscar Levant, Charles Coburn, Hazel Scott, and Al Jolson. (139 minutes,’45)
