Communion: Mental thriller with Walken well cast as author Whitley Strieber, who finds himself visited by odd beings. Does he need a psychiatrist or an exorcist? A tad long in the tooth and the dramatic scenes between Walken and spouse Crouse don’t really work. The movie still has some good moments. Cast includes Christopher Walken, Lindsay Crouse, Frances Sternhagen, Andreas Katsulas, Terri Hanauer, Joel Carlson, and Basil Hoffman. (107 minutes,’77)
Liar Liar: Fletcher Reede is a hard working lawyer who is constantly disappointing his wonderful young son. Eventually, before blowing out the candles at his birthday, Max makes his wish. He wants his father to not be able to lie for one full day. The results are absolutely hilarious.
Genealogies of a Crime: Deneuve is beaming in a twin role as the attorney for, and victim of, a strange youthful gentleman who’s implicated of killing his psychiatrist mother’s sibling after she supposedly subjected him to drastic mind-control therapy. Well-performed although conceited, deliberately perplexing blend of puzzle, satire, and surrealism; hoaxed up with pointless flashbacks within flashbacks and other narrative and graphic gimmicks. Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Michel Piccoli, Melvil Poupaud, Andrzej Seweryn, and Bernadette LaFont. (114 minutes,’97)
Say It Isn’t So: Pleasantly un-ambitious Klein falls for the new hairdresser in town Graham. They have consensual sex and then Klein discovers that Graham is his sister. It is a total flop. Frontier Marshal: Vibrant retelling of occurrences leading to legendary gunfight at the OK Corral. Scott is perfect as Tombstone’s new marshal, Wyatt Earp. Romero is more moody than cold-blooded as Dr. Halliday, and Kelly is the gal from his past who reminds the Dr. of his earlier, saner days as an obstetrician.
