One of the most bizarre refund stories is about a million little pieces book, a memoir, written by James Frey that explored the world of a drug addict through detox and rehabilitation. The novel sparked much controversy and readers can still write in to receive a refund for purchasing the book.

Hitting shelves in 2003, a million little pieces book received wide acclaim and was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show. Oprah decided to choose the book as part of Oprah’s Book Club and it became a best selling non-fiction book. The book made many recovering addicts and addicts have faith that they too could stay sober and healthy as James Frey had.

The story starts with James Frey’s recollection of being on an airplane, bloodied and bruised, on his way to rehab. 23 years old, he had been addicted to alcohol for ten years and crack for three years. He quickly decides he will not rely on the Twelve Steps program to stay sober, but knows he will have to take responsibility for his actions and his choices. We are told in graphic detail of his past with drugs and how he finds out his addictive tendencies may have stemmed from pain from chronic earaches as a toddler.

The Smoking Gun published an article about how a million little pieces book was not all true and how James Frey conned Oprah when he was on her show. Much controversy erupted and Oprah Winfrey had James Frey back on her show in 2006. She asked him a series of questions about the events in the book and why he lied. James Frey replied by saying that he wrote a lot of experiences as he remember them and was not if it would’ve been better to include a disclaimer or write the events in a different way. Oprah interviewed the publisher who said a lot of what happened in the book wasn’t impossible and the details that were true or untrue still had the same effect when reading it.

The publishers stood by the book, saying that that overall message was more important than the details. Random House set was prepared to pay $2.35 million dollars in lawsuits, but when all was said and done, only 1,729 people requested refunds for a million little pieces book. James Frey has written, My Friend Leonard and Bright Shiny Morning in addition to his a million little pieces book.

Something you should already have a grasp on is as follows. All the face cards are worth ten. Game titles, long the black sheep of the overall Wii set-up has finally come into its own. I gave it all I had. I fought against the CD tooth and nail. I despised it, I detested it, and I reviled it. I loved my cassette collection. It took me years of careful, plotting calculation to build it up to 450 beautifully clunky cassettes. I had world music, classic rock, shoe-gaze, traditional folk, heavy metal, even some Goth. It was a thing of beauty. And it didn’t survive.

There is latitude at first. The push towards any new technology can be resisted at first. You still have your cassette layer in your car and at home, there’s no need to jump on an expensive bandwagon. But the insidious nature of technology is that everything gets phased out. Mind you, phase is the operative word. It’s a slow, nefarious process.

Oh, so slow. When I bought a new car, guess what did not come standard anymore? It wasn’t power steering. A CD player replaced the cassette player. When my jam box went on the fritz, the only thing on the market was a cassette/CD player. Once they can get the new technology into your home, living side-by-side with the old stuff, they’ve got you.

Then, you wake up one morning and wonder. You begin to wonder why you’re still using the cassette player. It’s clunky and pops and no two sides ever have the same amount of music on them. You begin to see all the arguments against the old technology do, in fact, hold water. Yeah, cassettes do suck. The CD can give me the closest approximation to what the artist initially intended. They’re even better than LPs because they can be played through without flipping the wax over.

So, the same goes with the new Blu-ray blitz. So what that the Blu-ray is designed to play back in HD quality? So what that it can hold five times as much information as a regular DVD? So what that its better? So you can see the slippery slope you’re now on. Sooner or later, the Blu-ray will be the de facto format. Until they develop the holographic disc.

Beautifully performed and directed. Cast includes Montgomery Clift, Ivan Jandl, Aline MacMahon, Jarmila Novotna, and Wendell Corey. (105 minutes,’48)

Nutcracker the Motion Picture – Much of this version of The Nutcracker, acted by the Pacific Norhtwest Ballet, is like a music video with rapid cutting and close-ups of legs, faces, and elbows. This is enormously irritating. However the Tchaikovsky music is, obviously, amazing, as are Maurice Sendak’s sets and costumes. Cast includes Hugh Bigney, Vanessa Sharp, Patricia Barker, Wade Walthall, Russell Burnett, and the voice of Julie Harris. (89 minutes,’86)

The Facts of Life – Excellent comedy with Bob and Lucy leaving their spouses for an interlude together. The 2 megastars make a team worth observing. Cast includes Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Ruth Hussey, and Don DeFore. (103 minutes,’60)

Dingo – An out of the blue appearance by jazz trumpeter Billy Cross (Davis) in a youngster’s rural town empowers him to become a musician himself. Now grown up, he still fantasies of playing for a living and honoring his lifelong hero. This pleasant but dull paced storyline is kindled by Miles Davis’ dynamic presence and fawning behavior. Cast includes Colin Friels, Miles Davis, Helen Buday, Joe Petruzzi, Bernadette Lafont, and Bernard Fresson. (108 minutes,’91)
