The Toshiba company that exists today was created by the merging of two separate companies in the 1930s. The name that it is known by today started off as a nickname for the Tokyo Shibaura Denki, or Tokyo Shibaura Electric. To- and Shiba- were taken off the first parts of these names and officially combined in 1970 to form the name Toshiba.
