The 2 main ways you can learn to play acoustic guitar
If you are just starting out with the guitar it’s advisable to have some guidance. You don’t really want to spend hours practicing the wrong material or just wasting your time messing around without getting anywhere. In order to get good quality guitar instructions, many still decide to go to a teacher – which personally I think is an extremely good idea – while more and more people today are resorting to the Web hoping to find good advice.
There’s no right or wrong! Both ways can be very effective, it all depends on what your needs are as a student.
The Web has changed the way we do things and it’s no surprise that even the way we learn to play acoustic guitar has been revolutionized.
I will always advice taking private classes with a tutor because he can guide you and inspire you step by step in your learning process, while a computer cannot do that. Those that are learning online with videos must be ready to do a bit more DIY because there’s so much available today that it can be difficult to find the tutorials that are good for you. The trap here is that all these free video tutorials are there to give you a glimpse of what the paid courses are all about. Although they are good to learn about a training course they share only some of the information and you will eventually have to commit to a course if you want to get somewhere with your playing. Fortunately for you there’s a lot of good guitar tutorials online and it’s not difficult to find what you need.
A big plus about learning online is that you can watch the classes as many times as you wish to. You can easily practice along with your tutor and rewind till you play the exercises right. Let’s me tell you this is a major benefit! You now have your tutor available any time you need him and you’ll never forget what you did in class. Obviously you can’t do that with a “real” teacher, once you leave the class you are on your own till the next one.
If you are using online tutorials you can learn at your own pace and watch your classes whenever you like. Often your kids or your job are taking away most of your time and becomes impossible to get to a teacher at a convenient time. In these cases online makes it possible for you to follow your passion and learn to play acoustic guitar.
Something else to consider is the quality of the tutors you have access to online. Not all teacher are the same, some are terrible and some others are world class players. Online you can find the best of the best, but again you must use you discretion and make sure they are not selling you smoke.
If you can try to go for classes with a good tutor in near you, but if that is not a possibility learning guitar online can be a fantastic and fruitful alternative.
