Guitar is probably one of the easiest instruments you can learn to play reasonably well in a short period of time. In my 2 decades as a teacher I have seen how my students got to play in no time at all by just following a simple but effective system.

On the guitar we have the CAGED system that allows us to use five open chord shapes – C, A, G, E, and D – to get all the other chords. We are dealing with chords and scales shapes and not notes per se. As a matter of fact many guitar players are not aware of which notes they are pressing, all they need – and want – to know is where to put that specific shape.

To learn guitar chords means to learn shapes so let’s analyze some of the most important groups:

“Open Chords” are the most simple ones but yet some of the most effective. Just because this is where everybody starts from doesn’t mean that they are less important once you progress in your playing. On the contrary they are extremely used by professional guitar players of all styles for their unique sound, due mostly to the fact that open chords make use of open strings as well as pressed notes.

“Barre’ Chords” are also extremely popular because they allow you to play any possible chord. The problem with them is that they are a bit harder to play at first but give them some time and keep practicing, you’ll soon have them under your belt. The most popular are the A & E shapes barre’ chords.

“Power chords” are made of 2 notes only – some time doubled – and one shape is used for both major and minor chords. Even if they sound very good on an acoustic guitar, it’s on the electric guitar that they really shine. Power chords have been the work horse in many music styles from extreme heavy metal to melodic pop rock and have been the tool used to write many memorable hooks.

Did you know that there is a catch to this list? The person would have to have found the diamond in the wild, its natural setting. If the diamond was purchased from someone else this “contract” would not apply, but if the diamond was offered as a symbol of love or friendship (such as a setting in an engagement ring), these magical powers may return to the owner of the object.

Four separate castes, that’s how the Hindus classified the diamond. The categories were: (1) The Kshatiya, a brown/champagne colored diamond that prevented old age. (2) The Brahmin diamond, a colorless diamond that provided riches, power, friends, and good luck. (3) The Sudra, a diamond that was gray or black and glistened like a polished piece of metal, which brought about good fortune. (4) The Vasiya, a diamond the color of the “kodali flower” which brought success. Yellow and red diamonds are also available, but they were the exclusive gems of kings.

A diamond is composed of just plain ole’ crystallized carbon…the same substance that is found in our lead pencils. Since pencils are infinitely more inexpensive than diamonds, it’s the crystallized pattern of the diamond that makes the difference. This is the reason that this gemstone is so prized by collectors.

What is the hardest known substance? Any idea? It’s the diamond of course. Even though it’s hard, it can be chipped (if it is struck at just the right angle). This ability to be “chipped” is what allows a gemologist to shape the diamond into the thing of beauty that we buy in our jewelry stores.

White diamonds are definitely the most popular version, but diamonds come in every color of the rainbow. A diamond makes the perfect addition to any fine piece of jewelry.
