Strange Interlude – A Eugene O’Neill play that displays the complicated web of the difference between our thoughts and our words. Norma Shearer is cast as a woman who lost the love of her life when he was shot down in WWI. The movie tells of romances and marriages between Nina and three men, only one of whom she loves. It is about growing old without settling their complications. This is a preoccupying movie, with Shearer at her shining best. The cast list includes Norma Shearer, Clark Gable, Might Robson, Maureen O’Sullivan, Robert Youthful, Ralph Morgan, Henry B. Walthall, and Alexander Kirkland. (110 minutes, 1932)
Down to Earth – Homer Croy’s continuation to “They had to See Paris” has nouveau riche Midwesterner Rogers setting an end to his family’s mindless investing by affirming that he’s broke. Not one of Will Roger’s best film attempts. Cast includes Can Rogers, Irene Opulent, Dorothy Jordan, and Mary Carlisle. (73 minutes, 1932)
The Last Time I Saw Archie – Webb’s lone try at comedy is less comical than some of his more solemn films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had genuine potential, and Mitchum pleasantly underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes, 1961)
Unlawful Entry – Michael and Karen Carr have had a chilling event. Someone broke into their residence, and tried to steal from them. When Police officer Pete Davis shows up to assist, he appears to be a godsend. In the days to come they find officer Davis might be their worst nightmare.
Ruby Gentry – Pretentious, strolling account of simple-minded Southerner Jones wedding wealthy Malden to spite Heston, the guy she loves Cast includes Jennifer Jones, Charlton Heston, Karl Malden, and Josephine Hutchinson.
