Spring Break Road Trip to Panama City Beach
Panama City Beach, Florida, is a small city of around 40,000 people. It is on the panhandle that is northwest Florida. It is a highly desirable tourist destination situated on St. Andrews Bay overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.
The city’s official web site boasts that Panama City Beach is attractive for raising a family, which is true about eleven months a year. The web site also boasts that the city is an exciting tourist destination year-round, which is true, too.
However, it is for its intense, fun-filled Spring Breaks that Panama City is best known.
College students from every corner of the country, especially in the east and north, trek to Panama City Beach every spring. They come to party and get away from the pressures of test, essays, and school, in general.
To wit, for the past two years, Panama City Beach has hosted MTV’s Spring Break. And students will again have another chance to party there in 2010.
There are scores of hotels and motels to accommodate all the spring break partygoers. Still, it is highly recommended to make reservations early – six to twelve months in advance. Some of the accommodations are admittedly lacking in amenities, but if you’re young and full of beans, who cares, right?
There are many things to do in the daytime while on springbreak. Of course, there is the beach. Endless stretches of amazing beaches for swimming, sunbathing, playing volleyball or frisbee, and mingling with all the other college students looking for a good time.
Of course, these are the most crowded beaches during this time. If you want a little more privacy, nearby St. Andrews State Park is there with its excellent beaches, too. Entering the park will cost a small fee, but it could be worth it to get away from the crowds.
Not far from the main strip is Shipwreck Island, a popular water park. It costs around $30 to get in, but more money will be needed to eat and drink inside, as outside food and coolers are prohibited. And there are rides for everyone, young or old.
For the night owls, you’re in luck. There are scores of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs to party at all night.
Maybe the best-known nightclub is Club La Vela, purported to be the largest nightclub in America. The club is several stories and houses multiple themed rooms where parties never slow down.
Other well-known clubs located close by are Spinnaker and Hammerhead Fred’s. Of course, there’s also the Boardwalk Beach Resort, located right on the beach. Home to spring break concerts and themed contests, it might be THE place to see and be seen.
If you like shopping, there are plenty of shops and malls to be found all over Panama City Beach Spring Break, as well as more souvenir beach shops than you can visit.
A popular local attraction is Alvin’s Magic Mountain Mall. It resembles a cave and everything from beachwear to cheap souvenirs can be found there. As it’s Florida, an alligator display is quite the attraction, as well.
Spring Break 2010 starts about mid-February for some of the extreme northern schools. Typically, though, the whole of March is the most popular time to attend.
Spring Break officially ends around April 10, 2010, at which point the locals get their small city back.
