Motion pictures are great entertainment but they can also be very advantageous for our mental health. Motion pictures allow us to take some time to relax and get away from our daily difficulties and anxieties. We are able to let go of our daily cares as we get caught up in the lives we are viewing on film.
Snake Eyes – When the Secretary of Defense is murdered while at a heavyweight fight at an Atlantic City casino is going on, mayhem breaks out. Local policeman Rick Santoro discovers himself right in the middle of the mess. The doors are locked and everybody is kept inside the building as they try to promptly crack the crime.
Seize the Day – Williams is outstanding as Tommy Wilhelm, turning 40 and a disappointment by any standard, he is insolvent, damaged and hopeless for love. Wiseman and Stiller offer fine aid as his cold hearted dad and a con man he naively believes in. Lots of recognizable faces in tiny roles – Tony Roberts, Richard Shull, John Fiedler, Jo Van Fleet, William Hickey, Eileen Heckart, and numerous others. Cast includes Robin Williams, Joseph Wiseman, Jerry Stiller, and Glenne Headly. (93 minutes, 1986)
Tombstone – Lawman Wyatt Earp is prepared to retire. He has successfully cleaned up the streets of Dodge City, and moves to Tombstone. There he meets up with his brothers, and longtime friend Doc Holiday. Meanwhile a band of outlaws, called The Cowboys, are running wild in the region. This sets up the renowned shoot out at the OK Corral.
The Iron Horse – Mythical, quiet film in reference to creating of the transcontinental railroad, entangled with expected human interest subplots engaging surveyor O’Brien, darling Bellamy, deserter Kohler, etc. Might appear commonplace this current day; but it is essential to note that this film created what later was recognized as stereotypes. Cast includes George O’Brien, Cyril Chadwick, and Fred Kohler. Gladys Hulette, J. Farrell MacDonald. (119 minutes, 1924)
Philadelphia – Andrew Beckett is a gay attorney who has Aids. He is dying of the illness. He was fired from the old-fashioned law firm he worked for because there was concern of contracting the illness from him. As he battles to live on, he chooses to sue the law firm, to help advance the cause of other Aids victims. His originally homophobic attorney, fights through his prejudice to fight for this cause.
The Choirboys – Supposedly joke adventures of LA. Cops who lessen work pressures by raunchy doings. This is a Crude, foul-minded, heavy handed film from story by Joseph Wambaugh, who disavowed this turkey. Cast includes Charles Durning, Louis Gossett, Jr., Perry Baron, Clyde Kusatsu, Stephen Macht, Tim McIntire, Randy Quaid, Don Stroud, and James Woods. (119 minutes, 1977)
The General Died at Dawn – Fine play of Oriental intrigue, with mercenary Cooper falling in love with foreign agent Carroll when combating sinister warlord Tamiroff. Cast Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, Akim Tamiroff, Dudley Digges, Porter Chamber, and William Frawley. (97 minutes, 1936)
Belles on Their Toes – Here, Myrna Loy is cast as a widowed architect who will crusade to raise her aging brood. 20th Century Fox back lot seen at its best in recollecting early 1900s America. Clifton Webb makes a brief appearance at the finish. Cast includes Myrna Loy, Jeanne Crain, Debra Paget, Jeffrey Hunter, Edward Arnold, Hoagy Carmichael, Barbara Bates, Robert Arthur, Verna Felton, and Martin Milner. (89 minutes, 1952)
