Epiphone Les Paul Special II Review – A Great Inexpensive Guitar
Everywhere you search, it seems there are beginner-level instruments available for sale. You can even find them at stores like Target and Wal-Mart.
However, the old proverb “you get what you pay for” applies when purchasing a guitar at the same place you can buy motor oil. Clearly, it’s difficult to buy a substantial, novice guitar without wasting your money.
Look out, then, for the Epiphone Les Paul Special II! It has a street price of less than $170, so it’s pretty obvious that this guitar is aimed at budget-conscious consumers. Despite the low cost, you get rather a lot for your money.
The Epiphone Les Paul Special II is a notable entry into the budget instrument marketplace with its great playability and full sound.
The Epiphone Les Paul Special II has a basswood body with a bolt-on mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard appointed with dot inlays. The guitar boasts 700T/650R open-coil humbuckers with the typical tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece.
A master volume and tone control along with a 3-way selector switch complete the electronics package. The guitar is a comfortable 24-3/4″ scale with a 1-5/8″ nut width.
When we first played the instrument, we observed that we needed to make a few modest readjustments (adjusting the action and intonation). We also had to tighten up the tuners a little bit and spray some contact cleaner into the pickup selector switch.
However, these issues were moderately minor. Overall, we were quite impressed with the quality of the Les Paul Special II. The finish (wine red) looks truly attractive overall, but it is a touch thin, so you have to try not to nick it too bad.
Nevertheless, the action and sound are very nice for an instrument in this price range. There were a couple of dead spots, but nothing that hindered our use of the instrument.
Given its price, we strongly recommend the Epiphone Les Paul Special II for anyone seeking a budget-level guitar that is both playable and good-sounding.
