Seeing Stars: Tours Of Hollywood

by Kathy Allen

In our celebrity obsessed society many people would do anything to meet their favorite T. V. Or movie star. Most people, at one time or another, have wondered what celebrities are like in person and how it feels to live their everyday, publicly scrutinized life. Even if you have no designs on becoming a big star yourself one day, it’s easy to get caught up in hearing about their high profile lives. If you live in or are visiting the Los Angeles area, one way to get a little glimpse into the stars’ daily living and working world is to take one of the many Hollywood star tours.

The types of tours vary depending on what part of their lives you’re interested in seeing and the amount of money and time you’ve allotted to that part of your vacation. Tours can last anywhere from 2 or 3 hours all the way to a whole or half-day tour. The most common tour is the basic bus tour in which you drive around for a couple of hours seeing the most famous areas such as Beverly Hills, Hollywood and Bel Air.

Then there are the requisite tours of the stars homes, during which you are still on a bus or trolley, but the locations pointed out are only of the full or part time residences of certain celebrities. Many people have the idea that they will actually get out of the vehicle and get to browse around the stars’ homes or yards – and perhaps get a glimpse of them inside. This may have been the case long ago in the old days of Hollywood, but currently, due to city ordinances, the buses can pause briefly so you can take pictures and they can give you some background information about the residence or the celebrity, but they cannot let passengers out to roam around. Can you imagine the complaints or possible traffic congestion if they did?

Next are the Hollywood Studio tours, which can take a bit longer but can be a lot of fun because some of them are quite interactive. For example, on the Universal Studios tour, you get to experience an explosive special effects rehearsal called The Fast and the Furious: Extreme Close-Up.

Studio tours are also a great chance to see what goes on behind the scenes in the creation of movies and T. V. Show. And the bonus is that since you’re on a working studio lot, there’s a good chance to see some actual stars in action – or at least perhaps walking by on their way to the commissary.

For those that are interested in doing something a little less mainstream, there are a few alternative choices as well. One tour company is capitalizing on the seemingly insatiable need for the public to know all about the indiscretions and scandals that celebrities are involved in. Dearly Departed Tours offers two Hollywood tours that some might call a bit morbid.

They have two tours that can be considered just a touch morbid. One is the Hollywood Tragical History Tour and takes riders past many of the locations that have been involved with celebrities and their tragic or mysterious deaths. The other is the Helter Skelter Tour which is touted as a “3+ hour multi-media tour” which takes you to all the sites involved in the brutal murders of the LaBianca and Tate families that were committed by the Manson family.

You will probably learn more than you ever wanted to know about this heinous crime, but if you’re looking for a tour that’s a little off the beaten path, this will certainly fit the bill.

Movie Downloads Are A Problem For Some

by Silvia Gonzales

Movie downloads have become so easy you probably don’t know anyone who hasn’t tried it at some point. Young people, especially, seem to have an expert knowledge of what’s involved, whether they’re with a group or on their own. Because of the many options open to them, it became very easy for them to do what they want without getting caught.

Don’t panic and think you’re doing anything illegal just because you watch videos on YouTube. This is a far different process, because the owners of the videos post them up willingly for you to watch.

However, major Hollywood films and other movies are owned by the people that make them, and the people who post them online for your use are stealing them from the owners.

The problem is that a lot of people think the only ones who are doing anything really wrong are the people doing the actual uploading and that those who are only watching the videos, are innocent. However, it only takes a brief look at legal statements released by the Motion Picture Association of America, the MPAA, to know how very untrue that belief is.

You might not ever realize the amount of harm you could be doing in downloading movies illegally. For, you, understandably, it’s just a great chance to save some money and get a movie that hasn’t even been released on DVD. But again, these are stolen goods, and getting them online is just as bad as if you went up to someone and bought pirated copies of them on the street.

No matter how much emphasis there might be on those stories where somebody is caught doing illegal downloading, and no matter how scary the fines and even prison time they might have had to face could be, the fact is people who get caught are few and far between.

There just isn’t a lot of risk, and for most people this is comforting enough. However, if all people who did this were caught, the fines would be alarmingly huge.

The fact is, many people just never consider those lowly employees in the movie industry when they download movies. All they know is that they’re getting something they want and that they have very little chance of being discovered doing it. This should be considered justification for this behavior, but unfortunately, in too many cases, it is acceptable.

Try to understand how the people who work on movies feel. They live on the money they make from the film, and they won’t make any when somebody downloads a movie as opposed to buying it.

Put yourself in the shoes of somebody watching their personal, hard-earned profits slip away because of people downloading their movie without paying for it. You wouldn’t want this done to you, so you shouldn’t do it to anybody else.

There are all sorts of people involved in the movie industry. Some of them make a lot of money, but many of them don’t. It’s easy not to feel bad about high-paid actors losing money, but what about the extras and other workers? Tell everybody you know to stop downloading movies illegally. They may not like the idea, but in the end, they’ll feel better about themselves.

Ten Good Flicks To Consider And Enjoy On Your Day Off

by Marjorie Tucker

Dissimilar genres influence people in different ways of course. There are men and women both who love the chick-flicks and there are those that would rarely watch one. Some love horror movies and some dislike them but the good thing about the movie industry is that there is a little for everyone. Select from the reviews below and download a great motion picture to watch this evening.

House Springs – Having just been cast off by his fiance Driver, British actor Firth heads to the United States and falls for Graham. Then, wouldn’t you know it, Minnie shows up. There are great acting jobs from one and all, although not enough chuckles for a romantic comedy. The film is based on the novel New Cardiff by Charles Webb. Cast includes Colin Firth, Heather Graham, Minnie Driver, Mary Steenburgen, Oliver Platt, and. (92 minutes, 2003)

Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – Small town band hits it big, in an effort to link up songs from The Beatles’ timeless album into some kind of a storyline. As to The Bee Gees performing capacity, well let us just proclaim that they are not the Beatles. Cast includes Peter Frampton, The Bee Gees, George Bums, Sandy Farina, and Steve Martin. (111 minutes, 1978)

Adios Amigo – Odd western comedy, written, produced, and directed by Williamson, who also plays a role in the movie along with con guy Pryor. There is no sex or violence in this harmless flick, but it just does not quite work. Cast includes Fred Williamson, Richard Pryor, Thalmus Rasulala, James Brown, and Robert Phillips. Directed by Fred Williams (1975-Comedy 87 minutes rated PG)

On Guard – A faithful swordsman saves a child princess from the wicked grasp of her malevolent enemy. The toddler’s dad was also the swordsman’s guru. Cast includes Daniel Auteuil, Fabrice Luchini, Vincent Perez, Marie Gillain, Yann Collette, Didier Pang, and Philippe Noiret. (128 minutes, 1997)

Like Mike – Delightful film for babies in reference to an orphaned boy who possesses sneakers that might have belonged to Michael Jordan and turns into a basketball-playing marvel however what he seriously wants is a dad. Many basketball megastars appear as their selves. Cast includes Morris Chestnut, Jonathan Lipnicki, Robert Forster, Crispin Glover, and Anne Meara. (99 minutes, 2002)

Lilies of the Field – A “little” film that made outstanding, triumphing Poitier an Oscar as handyman who helps to build a chapel for Skala and German-talking nuns. Cast includes Sidney Poitier, Lilia Skala, Lisa Mann, Isa Crino, and Stanley Adams. (93 minutes, 1963)

The Cheyenne Social Club – A cowboy with very little money inherits and runs the Cheyenne Social Club which to his surprise turns out to be a brothel in the Old West. The movie has lots of chuckles, although stereotypes are thick throughout the movie. Cast includes Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Shirley Jones, Sue Ane Langdon, and Elaine Devry. (103 minutes, 1970)

Underworld – Evolution – The war between the Werewolves and the Vampires rage on. Now we look back to the start, and see how the argument between the two races started out. A confrontation that started way in the past is about to be brought into the present day to finish here.

Finding the Right Panasonic Lumix Camera

by Solomon Silver

With advanced stylish, high zoom, creative, stylish, and tough models to choose from, Panasonic has made selecting the right digital camera a bit confusing. These different classes of cameras are not distinct. Several camera models are featured in multiple categories making the choice extra difficult.

If you have ever wanted to take your camera into the water, or ski with it, or go rafting with it, then the tough camera from Panasonic may be a fit. It is a weather proof digital camera that can still capture sharp images with the image stabilization feature. This is a superior offering to the competing Olympus line.

For the point and shoot photographer that also wants some control, the Advanced stylish cameras fit the bill. Smaller generally than the DSLR’s, these also have powerful zooms up to 18x and several shooting modes. They are generally smaller than the more advanced featured cameras like the High Zoom model.s

My personal favorite of Panasonic’s cameras is the High Zoom variety. Here is where cameras such as the DMC FZ35 with an 18x zoom offers Pro-sumer level performance at almost a point and shoot price. This line of cameras offers Leica lenses with optical image stabilization, plus a 27 mm wide angle. Additionally, it offers RAW output modes.

If a person wants a point an shoot camera, then the stylish variety offers the best options. These cameras can go in a pocket, offer zoom levels up to 5x, flash, and even video on some models. Mega O.I.S. or image stabilization is standard as well. Several of these models also offer video capability.

By offering a broad selection of cameras that bring what most photographers want into every category, Panasonic has created a powerful brand influence. Almost any level of photographer, short of studio pro, can find a camera that fits their shooting style. Navigating the Panasonic category’s may actually be harder than using their cameras!

Win Your Next Photography Contest

by Kristaria Dawson

Photography contests abound in the world of photography. A photo contest is a great way to enhance your skills as a photographer. It can also be an avenue to get your pictures out there to be seen by more people. Here are some points that you should be aware of to help you win that photography contest.

1. Pay attention to the rules before you enter. You are familiar with fine prints in product pitches and sales advertisements, but photography contests have fine print too. While the fine print is in tiny type that you may find easier not to read, paying attention to the information inside this area can make or break your ability to win the contest. This section will give guidelines for your submissions, such as size, type and how many prints you can enter. It will also tell you the disposition of your entries; there are times where your submissions become the property of the photography contest organization. This will mean that your photographs may be used on the internet or wherever and whenever they please, with no royalties to you.

2. Let your entry be consistent with the theme of the contest. There are some photographers who just pick the best picture in their archive and hope that the judges will use their imagination to connect it to the theme. However, judges will usually disqualify a picture if it is too far from the contest theme. It would be better and be more challenging if you would take new photos that stick to the theme. Your creativity and skills will be further honed by doing this.

3. Research on past winners and judges. There are some contests that are held annually. Research their past winners to find out what stands out. While you don’t want to copy their work, it can be a starting point for you. If the contest is sponsored, research on the sponsoring company and what they are focused on. Finally, if the judges are already named, find out more about the judges – what kind of work they do, what style they like or even what kind of images they would appreciate.

4. It is wise to use photograph submissions that tell a story. Just as a good story will draw the reader in, photos that cause emotion in the viewer will score well because they allow the viewer to connect. There are many cases where technical merit has been placed second to the ability for a submission to elicit emotional response.

5. While we just mentioned that technically excellent photographs may not win over those that tell a story, you still want to submit a piece that shows technical proficiency. If it is out of focus or of bad composition, it will surely not win.

6. Don’t give up. Yes! Don’t give up! Keep entering one photo contest to the next. If you win, this will serve to increase your credibility and skills. If you don’t win, just keep on going. Joining a photography contest will enhance your skills more. It will help you to develop technically and will continue to raise the bar high for you.
