TVs, also known as television sets, are used for watching television broadcasts. They began commercial production in the United States, United Kingdom and Russia between 1928 and 1934, starting with the Baird ‘televisor.’ The original was actually a radio with an additional device that produced a postage-stamp sized image.

After the Second World War, Americans had more free time and disposable income. This allowed for increased purchase of household items such as TVs, and by 1962 televisions were present in roughly ninety percent of American households. Production increased and prices dropped, leading to greater access for the average American.

Today, television sets have reached new technological heights. Many have the ability to connect with other informational and programming sources like DVD players, video game consoles and headphones. Some even offer the possibility internet connection. Infrared remote control capabilities have become the standard, and regardless of their high-tech capabilities, all TVs feature a display, antenna and tuner of some sort.

Today TVs use CRT, LCD and Plasma screen technologies, amongst others, in order to offer a great variety of possibilities for image display.

While television sets began displaying images in black and white, color technology has since replaced it. Color sets starting being bought by the masses during the 1960s, with the 1966 introduction of the Porta-Color set from General Electric.

It was in the 1970s that color sets became the norm with color broadcasting adopted by most programming networks. By the 1980s, black and white sets were barely used, except for small portable sets. With current digital and HDTV capabilities gaining popularity, black and white units are pretty much incompatible.

The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) was the first company to make air a country-wide color program, when it aired the Tournament of Roses Parade in 1954. The first prime time color telecast was The Marriage, a sitcom on NBC, which was shown in color in 1954.

Also during the 1950s, color videotape recording capabilities became possible, allowing for syndicated programming.

The other major networks, ABC and CBS, were slower to adopt the new broadcasting technology. They picked it up in the 1960s.

There are three standards for color telecasting: Phase Alternating Line (PAL), National Television System Committee (NTSC) and SECAM, a French acronym. NTSC is the standard for North America, while Western Europe, Australia and Eastern South America are covered by PAL. France still uses SECAM.

Since 1983, the Gibson Les Paul Studio has been one of the company’s best selling instruments. Though in the beginning targeted at studio players (hence the name), it has since become a popular guitar for both recording and live use.

It lacks aesthetic appointments like neck and body binding, but still catches the thick sound that characterizes the Les Paul sound.

The neck is sure enough Les Paul through and through. It reminded us of a 50′s Les Paul, which in all probability helps the instrument grab that chunky sound Gibson is so well-known for. The pickups (490T and 490R) also help capture this classic tone.

Even though it was in the beginning designed for use as a Studio guitar, several guitarists soon learned that the lighter weight made it perfect as a gigging guitar. Why? It’s simple. The chambered body results in a lighter weight, which makes it acceptable for 2-3 hour sets.

Our inspection model came equipped with a beautiful black finish with gold hardware. Try as we could, we couldn’t find any faults in the finish or fretwork. The instrument played very well with no buzzing whatsoever.

The rosewood fretboard was pure Les Paul, down to the immediately distinctive trapezoid inlays. From lead guitar to thick power chords, the instrument felt, played, and sounded like a much more high-priced Les Paul.

If you’re curious what the distinctions are between a Les Paul Studio and a more traditional Les Paul, it’s actually pretty easy. The Studio model lacks body and neck binding and has a chambered, lighter body.

It’s easy to understand why the Les Paul Studio is one of Gibson’s best-selling models, and we give it our heartfelt recommendation.

Zoolander, Male model Derek Zoolander is employed to help stop a group of assassins who are posing as male models. He must somehow break into this private group. Making things even more demanding is Hansel, a new, up and coming model, who keeps screwing things up for Zoolander.

Everybody’s favorite film, Laws of Attraction, N.Y.C. divorce attorney Moore has never lost a case but meets her match in scheming protesting attorney Brosnan, who furthermore manages to get her to let her guard down. Romantic comedy on no account nears the bulls eye, however showcases Brosnan’s laid back charm and gives Moore a rare comedic possibility. Cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Julianne Moore, Frances Fisher, Parker Posey, Michael Sheen, Nora Dunn, and David Kelly.

Casino, Sam Rothstein has worked his way through the mob ranks and now runs the casino that his Chicago outfit owns. When mob strong arm Nicky Santoro arrives in town, Sam pleads with him to keep a low profile. Business is good, and his services aren’t really needed. Nicky just can’t help himself, and he starts banging heads. Now Sam’s peace world gets turned completely upside down.

Sensational film from the year 1978 is Inglorious Bastards. 5 cadets getting ready to be court-martialed in WW2 take off and try to make their way through France, wanting to get to the Swiss border. Cast includes Ian Bannen, Bo Svenson, Fred Williamson, Peter Hooten, and Michael Pergolani.

Mamma Mia, Sophie is about to get married. Her single mom has invited her two best lifetime friends to the wedding. Sophie has invited three men from her mothers past, wanting to find her father, and have him walk her down the aisle. Old romances are reborn during the disordered day before the wedding.

Casino Royale, This is an traditional James Bond escapade. The wit is gone, and a tough and gritty 007 is trying to take down Le Chiffre, the investor for terrorists. Bond must beat Le Chiffre in a huge money poker competition to help the C.I.A. capture him.

Finding Nemo, Marvelously made cartoon family adventure flick. Nemo is a young blowfish that has been scooped out of the sea by a diver. His dad Martin is overwhelmed with guilt, and will swim the length of the ocean to find his young son. His journey takes him on an amazing venture with his newfound friend Dory, a blue tang, that in the end sees him reunited with his only son.

Metropolitan, Conventional comedy, filled with sarcasm, is set throughout Christmas season, with hermit Clements drawn into small gang of buddies, and out of his shell. Cast includes Carolyn Farina, Edward Clements, Christopher Eigeman, Taylor Nichols, Allison Rutledge-Parisi, Dylan Hundley, Isabel Gillies, Bryan Leder, Can Kempe, and Elizabeth Thompson.

The House of Yes, On a stormy day in 1983, a youthful man brings his fiancee home to meet his insolvent Washington, D.C, family, containing his crazy twin sis, Jackie-O, whose fantasies in Jacqueline Kennedy have lengthened to the point of reinacting the JFK assassination-with live bullets. Well made black comedy, based on the stage production by Wendy MacLeod. Cast includes Parker Posey, Josh Harnilton, Tori Spelling, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Genevieve Bujold, and Rachael Leigh Cook.

Rock My World, This is a pretty good comedy set in England (however shot and funded in Canada) that went directly to video in the U.S. although is far more involving than its theatrical destiny could show. We see an aristocratic British couple rent their mansion to a rock band and end up posing as the butler and chef while the eccentric team ultimately shows up. Observing the interplay create between these extremely variant generations and lifestyles is fun and the music is amazingly catchy. Cast includes Peter O’Toole, Joan Plowright, Alicia Silverstone, Jairnz Woolvett, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, Christopher Bolton, and Lochlyn Munro.

It has been six months since the official announcement of the first Warcraft movie, and although some specifics are a little scarce, we now know quite a bit about the outline of the movie and what we might expect when it is finally released.

Fanfare – The movie is being directed by Sam Raimi. His resume includes the first three Spiderman movies (he is rumoured to have walked out on the fourth) Scream and (if you are old enough to remember) the excellent Evil Dead. This inital announcement shows that this is no mini-budget tie-in or rip off. This is being seen as a major movie release with serious production and directorial values.

It is being written by the Robert Rodat (not Donat as reported elsewhere. Bob Donat is dead. We have said our final goodbye to Mr Chips sadly). Anyway, again a great pedigree. He wrote Saving Private Ryan, apparently after sitting and thinking on his son’s eighth birthday about war (apparently his son ‘s birthday is 6th June – D-Day). Not sure if my 9 year old would be happy if I spent his birthday musing about the past, but in Robert’s case it proved to be a good thing. Ryan is perhaps the greatest and most realistic take on war Hollywood has done in the last thirty years…

New Zealand is being cited as the most likely venue for the outdoor filming. This makes some sense, there is enough of New Zealand to go around, and the aspects certainly evoke an “Azerothian” feel to me.

Don’t hold your breath for this film. Although the people who announce on release dates are pretty tight lipped. We are being told that a film of this type will be at least another two years in the making. However, I would bet that it timed to be released with the expansion AFTER Cataclysm, and that will be at least three years from now. Expect there to be some shared concepts between the two. Perhaps even the re-emergence of “World of Warcraft 2″ rumours that have been doing the rounds recently.

At this early stage, one thing dopes seem certain. The film will be action based (as opposed to quest based) though whether we have Alliance verses Horde or either verses Scourge – or indeed a mixture of the two – remain to be seen. Of course, we could always have a new entity introduced just for the film.

Certain aspects are still totally unknown. The plot, actors and full storyline are a complete mystery. The chances are that even the film’s producers do not know who or what they are.

The production company is Legendary Pictures of “300″ and “Batman Begins”. Again, fantastic news for those of us waiting for a real action movie with top notch production values. I’m just thankful that Michael Bay has nothing to do with it any more. A man that can turn any specific title into “generic mush” with his direction should be kept well away from this movie. With it now being clear that this man is no longer part of the Warcraft movie we can breath easily knowing that it’s unlikely that our much beloved game will be turned into “ABC action movie on rails – with no regard to existing plot or Lore – made to showcase my special effects team Part 4″ like most of Bay’s output seems to be. Rant off.

A basic home theater system may only consist of a television, a Blu-Ray or DVD player and a set of surround sound speakers. But there are also incredibly intricate home theater systems that include a number of multimedia options and a substantial assortment of technical features.

Home theaters are the thing these days. Every home wants and needs a room just for watching movies. Home theaters strive to replicate the theater experience with quality audio and video meant just for the home. The visual part usually includes a big screen or a high definition television. Sometimes it even includes a projection system. High quality audio output is more often than not accomplished with a high fidelity surround sound system.

It’s fun to swap opinions on favorite movies and favorite actors. Every person has an opinion and none is more right or wrong but everybody has their own favorites that they like. Some actors astound us with their immense talent, some actors are pretty to look at and then of course some are both of those things. Sometimes we admire an actor more for what he does away from the movie set as for what they do onscreen since some actors are just impressive people who use their fame and fortune to help others who are less fortunate throughout the world.

Brad Pitt has been recognized for his pretty boy good looks since he first came on the scene in the 1991 film “Thelma and Louise”. On the contrary he hasn’t always played the role of the good-looking boy. If you remember “Seven” and “Twelve Monkeys” both from 1985 you know what I mean. While the tabloid press seems to take his personal life and overshadow his movie roles, what is the most admirable thing about Brad Pitt is his commitment to humanitarian causes throughout the world. He endlessly donates sizeable sums of his wealth to help people that are less fortunate.

When Hurricane Katrina practically wiped out the whole city of New Orleans, Brad Pitt started the “Make it Right Foundation”. The foundation was created to assist in the redevelopment of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans. They build affordable and sustainable homes that are true to the diverse culture of the city of New Orleans. The goal was to complete the building of the homes quickly so that the residents could return to their homes as soon as possible. These things have been Brad Pitt’s true success.

There is a different great actor who is greatly admired for his generosity. Paul Newman passed away this past September 26, 2008 but he will long be remembered for great movies like “Road to Perdition” from 2002, “The Color of Money” from 1986 and “Absence of Malice” from 1981. He also played Butch in the well known and ever beloved “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” from the year 1969. And then of course, the list of great Paul Newman movies goes on and on.

Nonetheless it is his philanthropy that we can all admire. In 1982 with a colleague he created a line of food products that he dubbed “Newman’s Own”. It started with only a salad dressing and rapidly expanded to other products including pasta sauce, lemonade, popcorn, salsa and more. When he started the company he established that all of the income generated after taxes would be donated to charity. In early 2006, Newman’s Own had donated over $250 million.

Tom Hanks is an incredible talent. It is rather outrageous that he got his start in a goofy TV show called “Bosom Buddies”. Later he played an amazing role as Andrew Beckett, a gay lawyer who was infected by the AIDS virus and took on his own conservative law firm for firing him because of the fear that they may also contract the disease. Tom won his first Academy Award for that role in 1993.

After that in 1994, he became just the second actor in history to win back-to-back Oscars as he again took home the award, this time for “Forrest Gump”. Obviously, there are also many other great movies from the funny and sweet like “Big” to the more serious like “Castaway” where his co-star was in fact a volleyball.

Our favorite movies and favorite actors and actresses may vary from time to time. We may love them for their talent or for other reasons but now that we can download full length, high quality movies from the Internet instantaneously we don’t have to miss any more of the movies that we choose to see.

Guitars with 12 strings have been in use since the late 1800s. These instruments have given singers that extra boost of sound lending an almost orchestral mood to presentations. They are even more popular than they have been in years.

With a double set of strings, they can fill listeners’ ears with a big sound almost like two guitars at once. They can be tuned slightly lower than a standard six string guitar giving a singer more latitude. Having a big sound offered by a 12 string means that a performer can have a full sound without having to share the stage with anyone else.

Their large, robust sound made 12 strings popular with Tex-Mex “Tejano” street musicians. These guitars were so loud that one player could get passing people to stop and listen to their songs and pay for the privilege.

Blind Willie McTell and Hudy “Leadbelly” Ledbetter helped make the 12 string a famous blues instrument. They played Stella guitars, manufactured by Oscar Schmidt. Because Stellas were good quality, inexpensive guitars, they could take the pounding of use and road abuse. These blues players used these unique guitars to achieve a singular sound,separating themselves from other singers.

Their popularity waned somewhat until the folk music fad in the early 1960s. Many new folk singers embraced the full sound of the 12 string guitar and it became a standard of many famous bands. Pete Seeger used a 12 string guitar when he performed with the folk band The Weavers. This renewed it’s popularity and the 12 string soon over shadowed the 5 string banjo that had taken over it’s popular spot.

With the advent of Folk Rock, the 12 string was electrified to stand along side it’s 6 string brothers. Most major manufactures rushed to get into the growing market for electric instruments. Gibson, Gretch, and Fender were all putting out electric guitars with 12 strings. Guitars were made with single cutaways, double cutaways, and standard upper bouts.

The Rickenbacher electric 12 string guitar is perhaps one of the most revered guitars ever in history. It has graced the hands of Slash of Guns and Roses, George Harrison of the Beatles and Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. It will always be The Rickenbacher electric 12 string guitar. This is the one to get you hands on.

Brilliant film empowered by Chekhov’s The Seagull, investigating the line between art and life, and how the 2 influence each other. Cast includes Nicole Garcia, Bernard Giraudeau, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Ludivine Sagnier, Robinson Steveniu, Julie Depardieu, Yves Jacques, and Michel Piccoli.

Season of Passion, Classy research of human being relations; MIlls and Borgnine are country workers who each year take a trip to the city for their fling with Baxter and Lansbury. Cast includes Anne Baxter, John MiIls, Angela Lansbury, Ernest Borgnine, and Janette Craig.
