Rupert Grint is probably best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies. He has appeared in all of the movies alongside his co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. He shot to fame in 2001 following the release of the initial Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (the Philosopher’s Stone in the UK).
Rupert Grint was brought into the world on August 24, 1988 in Harlowe a town in the south of England. He is the eldest of five children with one brother and three other sisters making up his family. Before he was handed the role of Ron, he had only been in school performances and skits. However, since he was a huge fan of the Harry Potter books, he was eager to audition for the part.
Rupert heard about the Harry Potter auditions through the BBC website and was desperate to win the part. He sent in an audition tape in which he impersonated his drama teacher. Following this initial tape he had to go through a further six auditions that involved speaking lines from the script and doing a screen test. Finally he was awarded the role as Ron Weasley at the age of 11.
The movie was an instant success and Rupert got great reviews for his performance as the much loved Ron Weasley. After his initial performances he was signed to reprise his role as Ron in following Harry Potter movies. He was awarded for his performances by various institutions such as the Independent Press Academy.
Other movies he has been in following his success in Harry Potter include: Thunderpants (2002) in which he played a science nerd and Driving Lessons, with Julie Walters (2006). The former was a box office flop and received bad reviews, but the latter was well received and earned him acclaim for his clever performance. He has also done radio work with the BBC.
Coming up there are several projects to be released or in various stages of completion and negotiation. 2010 will see the penultimate Harry Potter film released: HP and the Deathly Hallows Part One. In 2011 the final Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two. There are also two other movies waiting release – Cherrybomb and Wild Target.
It seems that Rupert Grint will have no problems branching out from the Harry Potter franchise to form a successful acting career. He has consistently received good reviews for his on screen work in the Harry Potter movies and his other projects. In fact, critics of the latest Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince claimed that Rupert was the stand out among the three stars of the movie.
