The Importance Of Having Content On Your Website
Karen is a loving mum to Tommy who is having his 8th birthday party. He has begged Karen for a Spiderman cake. Being the best mum in the world is hard but Karen starts to prepare to make the best Spiderman cake ever. She does not want it to just look good, but also taste good. So she ensures the right ingredients are put into the cake itself before she decorates it to look like Spiderman. Like everything, the cake is a success and gets thumbs up from Tommy and his friends.
Now for his 18th birthday, Tommy has asked his mum to build him a website. The website he wants is going to focus on car rental. Being a super mum is hard but Karen sets out to build her son the best car rental website there is. As she studies hard she realises that there are a few main ingredients needed to have a leading car rental website. One of those is content. Content will not only help people recognise what the website is about, but it will also help to decorate the site to make it look appealing. Karen knows that just like the Spiderman cake, without a good tasty base cake, it would not have been popular. She also knows that without the right trimmings she could have run the risk of Spiderman turning into a big red blob! This is similar to the website as she needs content about car rental or it may be hard to find out what the site is about.
Content is definitely important. You may be thinking that adding content to a website is easy. In some aspects this may be true, however for Karen’s website to rank it must be relevant information that not only people find informative but also the search engines. If Karen starts adding content about making Spiderman cakes, how will the site rank for car rental?
If Karen can add content relevant to renting a car or other travelling information, Karen will find that the search engines may just find that relevant and useful. This may increase Karen’s rankings.
Now Karen needs to determine where her content will be placed. She needs to ensure the content is evenly placed throughout the website and not just jammed onto the homepage. By evenly distributing the content throughout the website, visitors will hopefully click through the site, extending the time they are there. This is a good thing for rankings as the longer people stay on a site the better. Just as Karen ensured the Spiderman cake looked enticing so people would enjoy the delicious base cake, she must make the homepage look enticing so visitors will be intrigued and want to search the website a bit more.
Keywords are the main focus for having content. For car rental, Karen must consider the words that people search for to rent a car. For example, it would be very unlikely that someone would put the words – Spiderman cake into a search engine to rent a car. So Karen must determine what words she would like the site to rank for and then strategically add them throughout the content. If Karen had placed pretty purple ribbons on the cake and said it was Spiderman, Tommy would have been very confused. This is much like keywords and she needs to ensure she can rank for the more popular search terms by adding these terms into the content. Seems easy, but there seems to be many websites that add content for the sake of having a few more pages. This does nothing for your rankings unless it is relevant.
Keywords need to be spread across the content. Karen must have flowing sentences that make sense and are relevant for it to work. It must make sense and also look natural. Karen could have tried to add to the main ingredients of the birthday cake to make it taste better, but without balancing the ingredients out it may have flopped and be useless. This is similar to content. It must be evenly balanced with keywords to look natural.
So in review, Tommy and Karen now can see how important content is. Karen has added relevant keywords and has spread content throughout the website, and not just the homepage. She has also included information that people may be interested in when they rent a car. This is great and is a big step in having a fantastic car rental website. Let’s hope Tommy is grateful and appreciates his number 1 mum.
