There is one primary aspect to improving your character in the game Mafia Wars and that is skill points. These points are one of the most important aspects of the game in order to help you develop your character, complete the different jobs and advance through the game.
Mafia Wars skill points are attainable in a variety of different ways. Leveling up, doing jobs and trading in reward points will all get you skill points. One skill point is rewarded each time you complete a job. You are able to exchange reward points for skill points and you get five each time your character levels.
There are a few ways to obtain reward points one of which is by purchasing them (with real money not your Mafia Wars money). You are able to play the game and obtain skill points without buying them. Skill points will come to you as your advance naturally through the game.
Skill points can be spent in a variety of ways. These attributes are attack, defense, health, energy, stamina and the new influence. Spend these points wisely because they will determine how quickly you can progress in the game. In the end, where you use them is your choice and defendant on what type of game you plan to play.
The Basic Attributes
You are able to put your skill points into the following attributes: defense, attack, stamina, energy, health and influence. Attack defines your strength in a fight. When you are attacked by another player your defense will determine how much damage you take. Your health level helps increase the odds of winning a fight and more stamina increases the amount of times you can attack another player. The new influence attribute will effect how many rackets you are able to shake down at a time.

Attack
Attack strength in the Mafia Wars game is a blend of your individual strength, the strength of your Mafia gang and a mixture of the attack points of items that you purchase or pick up (the best item is used). You can boost your attack strength in a 1:1 ratio with skill points.
Defense
Just like your attack attribute, your overall defense level is influenced by a variety of things including your individual attack level, the strength of your Mafia gang and items you have. You can boost your defense quicker in the Mafia game by getting good items. Every skill point used will boost your defense by one level.
Health
Health is not used in the Mafia game for anything other than boss attacks, fights and work as a hit man for other Mafias. As with the attack and defense attributes health is also on a 1:1 ratio.
Stamina
Your stamina level is improved at a ratio of 2 to 1. Two skill points are necessary in order to boost your stamina level by one point. The amount of time you are able to attack other players is determined by your stamina level.
Energy
One of the most basic attributes in the game is energy. You will be able to finish more jobs and progress through the game faster if you have more energy. One skill point used will get your one energy point.
What is this Influence attribute?
Influence allows you to run rackets. You need influence in order to shake down each racket you own. As with most of the others, this attribute is also 1:1.
