In Praise of Play

by Nelson Pellew

If you would like to experience one of the most awkward social situations, try to involve a crowd of friends and family — or complete strangers for that matter — in a parlor game. Yes, well, perhaps they are no long called parlor games. I believe the new marketing term of choice is home entertainment. Be that as it may, I take you understand the gist of my premise: getting people to participate is a challenge.

Growing up, my parents shunned the television set and encouraged us, their loyal brood, to play. No, not video games — not computer role-playing games — but play games. We were treated to games of charade, recitations of Shakespeare, and your ubiquitous selection of board games. Perhaps this is indicative of the times, or my parents deep distrust of popular culture, but something extraordinary happened on the frequent occasion that they hosted a soiree: people played games.

There is a fine art to choosing the right parlor game to fit the temperament of the crowd. Should your guests be more of the wall flower type, you would be ill-advised to start an animated game of charades. No, for the timid a rollicking few rounds of pictionary are in order. Should your guests be a tad more adventuresome, you may want to consider karaoke, or a few rounds of Yoostar.

Certainly many of you are familiar with pictionary from its day time incarnation as Win, Lose, or Draw. Most of you, I’m sure, may not understand what a game of Yoostar entails. First and foremost, I am simply using the brand name to refer to a game that I have extrapolated from the service. This service involves the use of a green screen and easy-to-use software to figuratively beam yourself into the film.

You and your guests can choose which film excerpt to cue up. Presently, there are approximately 20 clips to choose from, including the perennial Casablanca. Now, you assign roles in any colorful, random manner, and then position the actors in front of the green screen. Once the software is prepared, someone yells action and the first actor to flub his or her lines is out of the competition. Yes, it is the best of charades set to a cinephile’s wildest dreams. Enjoy.

Nintendo Wii Console – It’s A Black And White Decision

by Nicky Williams

It’s probably fair to say that all the big three games consoles – the Sony PS3, Microsoft’s Xbox and the Nintendo Wii – all have their own individual advantages. Different gamers will have their own personal favourites and it’s pretty much a waste of time to try to persuade them that one of the other consoles is any better.

A lot of households today will have more than one, and very possibly all, of these games consoles. Portable consoles such as the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP may very well be part of the family’s gaming experience also. In most cases, games consoles double up as DVD or even blu-ray disc players.

Regardless of which console is “best”, it’s probably fair to say that the Nintendo Wii is the most sociable of the three consoles. Whereas the Xbox and PS3 are often to be found in teenager’s bedrooms, the Wii is more commonly found in the family living room. The Wii is less powerful than the other two consoles and has much less detailed graphics – more cartoon like as a rule. Yet it is the Wii that is often found connected to the big screen TV in the living room.

Part of the reason for this is the fact that the Wii’s motion sensitive controller means that, even though the graphics are simpler, it’s harder to follow the action on a small screen TV when you’re jumping around like a lunatic. The other thing is that it’s easier and more intuitive to learn games on the Wii. Even adults can do it – so it’s easier for all members of the family to join in the fun.

A further consequence of the extra movement required to play Wii games is that additional space is required when compared with other consoles. Again, this makes the living room preferable to the average teenage bedroom, where gamers would probably spend their time tripping over piles of discarded clothes, empty coke tins and half eaten pizzas.

The physical element to game play on the Wii is a good thing. It means that there’s a certain amount of exercise involved when playing Wii games. On the other hand, you do need to take it easy at first. It’s all too easy to wake up with a sore arm or stiff legs after an evening playing Wii Sports for the first time.

The fact that so many homes have a Wii in the living room now could be one explanation for the success of the black Wii. Nintendo released this in Japan during the summer of 2009 and it went on sale in Europe just before Christmas 2009. It was a very popular choice with consumers – quite possibly because it goes with the TV, the cable box and the DVD player better than the original white version.

How to Blog About Current Events As They Take Place

by Tyson Bradshaw

Blogging news stories as they occur is among the of the most fascinating and controversial applications of technology which bloggers have discovered. Something that makes the blogosphere so active is the fact that it is possible to revise a blog immediately, so the news on blogs is frequently more recent than the news in the paper, or on television. Unlike news provided by by these other media, news that appears on blogs doesn’t have to travel through a group of publishers and administrators before it reaches the public eye. This has some positive aspects, and several particulart disadvantages.

One of the most notable cases of news hitting a blog before appearing in other media happened in July 2005 when terrorism struck London. As passengers were removed from a subway car near an explosion, one man took several photographs of the scene with his cellphone, and within an hour these pictures were posted online. First-person accounts of the disaster began showing up on blogs soon after these photos appeared, and people all over the world discovered the events in London by reading the words and seeing the photos posted by bloggers.

The fact that these stories and pictures were being spread directly by persons operating without the added filter of a reporter helped to make the crisis feel very immediate to people across the globe. When it comes to blogging, news often appears in a very personal context. This has the potential to be the beginning of an thrilling new era of reporting, one that takes “New Journalism” to it’s logical next step by putting the power to shape how the news is written and read directly into the hands of the public.

Many bloggers and cultural commentators who are champions of the weblog movement feel that this increasing trend of people who getting their news from blogs is a good thing, because it makes the flow of information more democratic. By decentralizing the control of news, blogs allow more voices to enter the field of debate about important current events. However, many people are adamantly in opposition to the use of blogs as news outlets, and there are plenty of good arguments on this side of the debate.

Unlike newspapers or television stations, few blogs have fact- checkers, and there is little attention paid to journalistic accountability on many blogs. This can lead to the rapid spread of misinformation, and multiple falsehoods has taken the blogosphere by storm. The questions around whether blogging news as it happens is ethical or not are very complicated, but no matter where you stand on the topic of recent events blogs you are almost sure to agree that this movement has the potential to transform how modern people get their news.

Free Full Length Milk Movies

by John Halcomb

If you’re considering watching a relatively recent award-winning movie, I’d recommend Milk! For the small section of people who have no clue what the title represents, the Milk movie is not about the healthy drink that’s got from cows, goats, etc. It’s a biographical movie that depicts the life of Harvey Milk, the man who became the first gay person to be voted a public officer in San Francisco, California. Milk also laid claim to the distinction of being among the first three gay persons to do so in all of the United States.

‘Milk’ is the second movie created on the life of Harvey Milk. Before this recent flick featuring the life of Harvey Milk in 2008, the original movie based on the life of Harvey Milk was made in 1984. Name of the original flick was ‘The Times of Harvey Milk’. The movie at that time was not only nominated for the Oscars but also awarded with an Oscar in the Best Documentary Film category. Quality performance extended by the actors of the remake was equally good just like from the actors of ‘The Times of Harvey Milk’. ‘Milk’ got nominated for 8 categories and won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Original Screenplay. Sean Penn who devotedly played the role of Harvey Milk was worth that credit.

The filming for Milk was also as authentic as its crew. It was shot at San Francisco’s Castro Street and at the camera shop – Castro Camera that was once owned by Harvey Milk. The movie is based on the lifetime period of Harvey Milk’s life from his 40′s to his assassination. The story starts of in New York where Milk stays with his lover Scott Smith and refuses the suffocating life of staying in a closet throughout his life. His fresh start-up business at the camera shop on Castro Street becomes the advantageous meeting place for the gay members of the San

Franciscan community. Milk basically focuses on the rights of gays in the by gone years and their upgradation. Harvey Milk was one man who really worked hard to change this part of every gay’s life at the time when being a gay was considered awfully shameful. Milk saw many failures in the early years of his life before being voted as supervisor. The realization of the seriousness of the gay rights issue incited a struggling phase in Milk’s life. Two of his colleagues Anita Bryant and Dan White were also elected at the same time as Milk.

Dan White’s role has been perfectly portrayed by Josh Brolin. Dan White is a character with conservative ideas and was therefore constantly “out-voted” by Milk and other supervisors who are liberal. Dan White’s increasing frustrations end up in devastating mess and mark the chilling end of the movie. ‘Milk’ is one movie you should surely go for. It is interesting, emotional and funny. You can watch for free by downloading it from any Internet site.
