The Role Of Keywords Within SEO.
Using keywords in your websites and on your webpages is a proven fact that it will help you rank higher in google for that keyword. The way in which you use the keywords however is an often debated topic in the online marketing world and even more so in the SEO world. The reason for this is because google (and the little search engines) often change their ranking factors and rules so some thing’s that were really effective last time are no longer as effective now. However, there are always a set of clear cut guidelines you can follow in order to approach search engine optimization with success.
Keeping One Step In Front Of The Search Engines.
In order to stay one step of the game in regards to SEO you first have to understand what you shouldn’t do as these rules and lines that google set’s rarely change. If you do happen to break these rules or step over the line then you will be penalized and have your content you worked so hard on just ignored!
Spam Spam Spam!
Search engines do not take spam, or the sites that contain it, lightly. This is the most important thing you should remember. It used to be ‘acceptable’ in the eyes of search engine robots for your content to be 100% keywords with absolutely no meaningful text. However, this practice of keyword cramming or keyword stuffing is now something that does not go unnoticed and you will face a penalty for using this technique. Yes, keywords are important but you also have to provide solid and informational text for your visitors.
So, What Is The ‘Correct’ Keyword Density Then?
Of course, this leads to the question of how to determine what is considered spam and what is considered an acceptable level of keywords within your text and again this is a topic that leads to debate between SEO experts, webmasters and content writers alike. The general belief was that including a keyword within your text with a range of 5% to 10% was best practice. It certainly wouldn’t get you penalized and it made it blatantly obvious that your site was relevant to that topic. However, some believed the figure could legitimately be taken as high as 20% without any negative search engine effects.
Err On The Side Of Caution.
Having a keyword density of 20% or even higher is really not all that natural (unless you actually just can’t write or think of an alternative phrase to use every so often too). It is considered as trying to find a loophole in the search engine to get ranked higher, but the search engines job and what they work 24/7 on is to provide the best content for it’s users and if your using the keyword 20% or more then in their eyes you are really trying to gain the system. So keep it at a max of around 10% and you will see success for a long time.
Not Crossing The Line.
Keeping the keywords to this sort of level is an art, but it is not one that should elude most people. The art, of course, is to combine search engine optimization with informative content that will appeal to your visitors as well. In order to do this it is important that you use natural keywords.
What Exactly Are Artificial And Natural Keywords?
A natural keyword is one that you would use in everyday conversation relating to a given topic. In the case of your website, if you were to sit down and write 500 words of informative content you would find that certain words naturally creep into the article and appear several times. These are your natural keywords, but unfortunately natural keywords may not provide you with the results you require. For example, a little keyword research may prove that a natural keyword of “divorce attorney” is a very well searched phrase but there are also 2 million websites geared towards this key phrase. Further research may turn up the fact that “Find Divorce Attorneys” may be a little less popular with regards to searches but there are only 10,000 sites aiming for this keyword. This instantly improves your chances of being closer to the top of the search results and that coveted top spot.
Putting Artificial Keywords In Your Articles.
What you now want to do is go back through that article and see what keyword appears a lot of times and then replace it with the longer one. Sometimes this might not make the article flow however with a few more edits to the text around it too then it will soon make a lot of sense and be based on the keyword with the correct density.
Starting Again With Your Artificial Keyword.
If you don’t like the sound of re-writing an article then instead get the keyword in your head first and then write the content around that keyphrase and with that keyphrase in the front of your mind at all times. While thinking about that keyphrase the content will be a lot easier to write and including your keyphrase in the article will come naturally.
The Result Of Keyword Conversion.
By converting the artificial keywords to the natural ones this will directly result in content that not only flows for your readers but also will be keyword rich and have the right density’s for the search engines. As a direct result of this both your conversion rate and traffic will increase and cause you to earn more money.
