Seven Pounds, an American film drama, was released by Columbia Pictures in December 2008. Star actors and actresses that can be seen in the film include Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Barry Pepper, and Woody Harrelson. Gabriele Muccino directed the film which is about a man (Will Smith) that tries to save the lives of seven different people. It runs 123 minutes and is rated PG-13 for disturbing content, sensuality, and thematic material.
Seven Pounds was filmed in and around Los Angeles, Malibu, and Pasadena, California. The movie was based on a script by author Grant Nieporte. Other actors included in the film include Michael Ealy, Elpidia Carrillo, Judyann Elder, Bill Smitrovich, Quintin Kelly, and Robinne Lee.
All of the trailers for Seven Pounds kept as many details concerning the film as mysterious as possible, making the film’s title to be considered a “mystery” to those in the film community which the studio refused to explain. The reasoning behind this: director Muccino didn’t want the audience to know exactly what Smith’s character was up to. Smith claims the title is in reference to Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, which resembles the film in its plot.
In Seven Pounds, Tim Thomas (Smith) is an IRS agent that causes a car wreck which kills seven people. In an attempt at redemption and to atone for the deaths he caused in the wreck, Thomas tries to save seven good people’s lives by awarding them each with a gift. He gives a lung to his brother, a piece of his liver to a child service worker, a kidney to a hockey coach, and bone marrow to a young boy.
Thomas meets a woman whose boyfriend is abusing her, so he moves into a motel and gives her the deed to his vacated house. He ultimately commits suicide by climbing into a bathtub full of poisonous jellyfish. He keeps the temperature freezing so it will save his vital organs and he can give his final two gifts.
Seven Pounds was shows in order to promote various charities and raise funds for food banks, soup kitchens, and the needy in cities all over America. It was promoted in Dallas, Cleveland, St. Louis, Denver, and Miami.
The movie opened in over 2,000 theaters, grossing $16 million on its opening weekend. It received mixed reviews from many different sources. It has been nominated for various awards, but the only thing the film has won was Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture at the 2009 Image Awards by Will Smith.
