We hear people talk about playing pool or sometimes it is referred to as billiards. I did some research and found that billiards is of course the plural of billiard. The definition to me has always been a ball deflecting off another and striking another. Most of the online dictionaries including Webster’s referred to it as the singular of Billiards. The first result on the Ask dot com page defined it as an adjective and stated see also Carom.

There are a couple billiards leagues that allow minors 18 and above to play and several Rec. rooms with no age limits. We have a 10 year old in town who has been playing league for several years and he is quite competitive.

I played 3rd and the score was one to one when I played my first game. I won the coin toss and started with a pretty decent break. I pocketed a ball on the break and proceeded to clear the rack. I shot a nice break out on my only trouble ball, put down all the stripes and my cue ball rolled kind of funny on the 8 ball.

I made a billiard on his stripe and executed a safety in the same shot. Cool. My opponent failed to hit one of his stripes on the next shot and I took cue ball in hand and ran the rack. Thanks to a billiard and safety shot, I was able to win the game.

I had no run outs last night as opposed to last week when I had 2. I did have to pay out on a few runs. Two of my team mates were in the zone. I went on to finish the night with 3 wins and one loss. Our team won by a land slide. It was a drag for the opposing team because they had to give us 5 games due to their missing player.

You’ve probably never even heard of him, even if you know about baseball pretty well. If you have heard of him, then you’ve most likely heard about this story already. What’s interesting is that most people are completely unaware that this ever happened. Dock Ellis’s no hitter in 1970 was one of the more unique things to ever happen in baseball.

It wasn’t until 1984 that Ellis shared his secret with the world, so none of his teammates had even known that he was on LSD during this game. Still, this is something cray that people had a hard time believing after he revealed this.

Why would a pitcher ever take drugs on the day of his start, you ask? Well, it wasn’t as if he purposely did this. He actually mistakenly believed that his next start wasn’t for a few days, so he had taken LSD on his day off, not thinking he would have to pitch until a few days later. When he learned that it was his turn to start, he rushed to the stadium immediately.

As far as the game goes, Ellis really doesn’t remember much of what happened. He says that all of his attention was on his catcher. Ellis was extremely wild during this game. He hit a few of his opponents and walked some batters. Somehow, they couldn’t hit his pitches either.

Teammates had to let him in on the past actions of the hurler. He had a few fielding chances, but jumped out of the way. Sometimes he said the ball looked very small, while other times it was big.

As amazing as Ellis’s accomplishment is, this can’t be praised. No professional athlete should be taking drugs, especially one who had worked with children telling them not to take drugs. Nonetheless, this is a story that people will talk about for a long time.

Ellis holds a record, but it’s a notorious one. While the idea of it is amusing, we should all hope that nothing like this ever happens again.
