Freestyle rap fight advice is hard to get by. As a ten year veteran battle rapper who gains about 80% of my battles, I determined to share about usable tips that have helped me live the combat rap circuit.

Focus on particulars. Mostly, the more specific your punchlines are, the stronger they affect. Attempt and chooes things about your opponent that aren’t at once obvious. For instance, I one time battled a guy with an Oakland A’s baseball cap. Quite than talk trash about the A’s- which wouldn’t be a good idea in Oakland- I began to list off difficult words about him that get with the letter A, such as “arrogant, asinine, and atrocious” not to mention a a few others that don’;t belong in print. This brings me to my following point…

Acquire the crowd. Most freestyle rap battle tournaments are resettled on interview vote. Even those that are determined by judges are still heavily influenced by the crowd. The lesson from this? You aren’t there to beat a rapper; you’re there to acquire the crowd. To do this, avoid pronouncing silly things aimed at the audience. If I had bagged on the A’s the crowd would have turned on me, which is why I kept it special without losing the crowd in my freestyle.

Be prepared. Anyone who’s battled for a while knows the importance of scoping out the competition. If I’m in a room full of MC’s, believe me, I watch every battle and try to come up with punchlines about each MC. Obviously, I spend more time focusing on the best ones, as there’s a greater chance I’ll battle them at some point! Having just a few minutes before going up on stage can help you come up with a few one liners that just may win the rap battle for you.

Show no mercy… most of the time. There is a very thin line in a freestyle rap battle between entertaining and abusive. Generally, you can be as ruthless as you want provided it’s entertaining. We all know someone who can say anything and get away with it; try and be that guy when you’re on stage. There are a few times when laying off a topic will score you big points. For example, MTV hosted a rap battle where one of the MC’s was blind. The guy who battled him, Swan, poked fun at the guys small stature, his goofy clothes and weak style. He didn’t make fun of the kids blindness (except saying “I’m a take you outside and rob you blind”). If he had, he would have lost the crowd in a nanosecond. But he didn’t and won the battle based on merit. A dope freestyler can rap about anything; he proved he could steer it away from the most obvious points.

The term maverick is used to describe people that are viewed as unconventional and independent, and do not think or behave in the same way as other people. There are many aspiring movie makers out there that take a maverick approach to filmmaking and end up failing. They waste their talent, time, and money trying to run before they can walk.

Wanting to be a maverick filmmaker is cool so long as you understand what it takes to succeed in the indie movie business. “Know the rules before you break them” says it all. You can’t make a splash in the movie business if you do not know how where to jump in. If you’re the type of person that does not like to listen to practical advice or is a know-it-all, then there is no benefit in continuing reading this. If you’re the type of person that is open-minded to new information then this is perfect for you.

Some aspiring movie makers are influenced by what they hear about famous filmmakers. So and so refused to compromise their movie vision and made the studio cave in to their demands. That’s how they game might be played in Hollywood, but at the true independent film level it’s different. A independent movie maker that lets their ego control their actions is doomed to fail big time. The cast and crew working on a indie movie are not being paid enough, if they are being paid at all, to deal with a indie filmmaker that does not listen to reason.

I treat investors money as it were my own. Before you shoot your movie it’s a good idea to highlight scenes of your script that are crucial to your creative vision. This is only my opinion, but I have yet to see a movie where every scene is epic. I have yet to talk to another screenwriter that told me that every bit of dialogue and scene they wrote is amazing. Some dialogue and scenes are simply there to keep the story moving. I hang out with an honest bunch of indie filmmakers and we pretty much agree every movie has filler written into it.

It could rub a unrealistic filmmaker the wrong way to think like that, but brutal honesty is great for the creative spirit. When you are breaking down your screenplay highlight scenes that are not crucial to your big picture creative vision. Those will be the first scenes to be cut down or taken out all together when time and money begin to run out during production. At the indie film level time and money always run out. Be ready to make changes to your film and creative vision if push comes to shove, which it will. During filming of my first movie Consignment I had to rewrite more than a few scenes on the spot or the movie would die right there. I do not feel I compromised my creative vision in any way by making needed changes on the set. I was able to overcome obstacles to finish the film. Isn’t finishing a film what it’s all about?

The long and short that I wanted to share with you is not to be a inflexible film snob. Sometimes the situation will demand you adapt your creative vision. Coming in with the attitude that you are flexible will help you deal with things that can kill a movie. Like an actor quitting, a difficult crew member, the lose of a location, or a equipment problem. A lot can go wrong when you are making a movie. The more open you are to not to waste energy fighting against what is and finding a fix, the better off you will be as a movie maker.

In no way does being flexible mean you will be a push over when making your film, but being a tyrant is a shortcut to failure. Wise is the indie movie maker that can find their filmmaking balance.
