Music Gear Recommended For Your Home Recording Studio
Like many other people that do home recording, I am totally addicted to buying new music gear. I know “Gear Acquisition Syndrome” is actually a bit of a bad thing because I should really be spending more of my energy on learning to use the stuff I already own correctly instead of looking for the latest and greatest gear but at the same time getting new music gear is too much fun to stop!
In this article I’m going to share 4 of my favorites that I’ve purchased online. I strongly recommend ordering these things for your own home studio.
Pianoteq VST Instrument Software – The best virtual piano I’ve heard in all my days. The software is also very small so that it takes up much less space on your hard drive and in your computer’s RAM The reason that Pianoteq is so small in comparison with traditional piano sampler software is because it’s not a sampler at all, instead it’s a “piano modeler.” It’s the fact that it’s a modeler rather than a sampler that makes Pianoteq’s playability so “realistic.” You have to hear it to believe it.
Celemony Melodyne Editor – This incredible advance in software takes the kind of pitch correction made famous by AutoTune to a much higher level because it allows the user to “reach into” chords in order to move the notes around one by one. The easiest way to explain what using this software is like is to say that it’s a lot like dealing with MIDI except with actual recorded audio. The possibilities for how this software can be used both for correction of mistakes and experimentation are truly endless.
Shure KSM44 Condenser Mic – Every music studio needs a good quality condenser microphone and the KSM44 will definitely get the job done if you are able to afford it. It’s 800 dollars when bought new but it is a sound investment. I have had my Shure KSM44 for 7 or 8 years and I’ve dropped it on the floor many times and to be honest I have not treated it real well in general, but it still sounds just like the day I bought it as far as I can tell.
Shure SM7 – This is a truly cool vocal microphone, in fact Michael Jackson’s vocals on Thriller were recorded with it. And if it is a good choice for MJ, I’m pretty sure it’s more than good enough for me.
