If you want to become a poker player, you need to know the essentials ideas in order to survive poker. Poker has different variants that may have different rules and regulations to follow. The most common among all poker variants is the use of 52 cards that is universal. Each card has its own number and suit. No duplication of cards in one deck. The number and characters in the cards are as follows: ace, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, Jack, Queen and King. Ace is considered to be the highest and the next in line is the King.
It’s important to know these basic ranks of cards to play poker. Poker will be difficult without any knowledge of this. This game is a game of highs; the person with the highest collection of cards wins the round. It would be foolish to join and bet your own money if you don’t know the ranking of cards and the rules. Winning chances would be very slim. Then poker wouldn’t be as fun as it should be.
There are ten poker hand rankings. These are as followed from lowest to highest:
High Card – A♠ 8♣ J♥ K♦ Q♠ – Next highest card breaks ties
2.Pair – A♠ A♣ J♥ K♦ Q♠ – Highest kicker breaks ties
3. Two Pair – A♠ A♣ K♥ K♦ Q♠ – Highest single pair determines winner
Three of a Kind – A♠ A♣ A♥ K♦ Q♠ – Highest kicker breaks ties
Straight – K♠ Q♦ J♣ 10♥ 9♠ – Highest card determines winner
Flush – A♠ J♠ 8♠ 7♠ 3♠ – Highest card determines winner
7. Full House – A♠ A♣ A♥ K♦ K♠ – 3 of a kind calls winner (Aces full of Kings)
Four of a Kind – A♠ A♣ A♥ A♦ K♠ – Kicker determines ties
9. Straight Flush – K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠ 9♠ – Any suited straight, all one suit
Royal Flush – A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠ or any other single suit
There could be times that player may have similar cards like having two aces. For this instance, a kicker is needed. When one player has a pair of aces and a Queen, and the other has a pair of aces and a queen, the player with the king wins. The Queen in this case is the “kicker.”
In the example above, the Queen is considered to be the high card of the player. The card next to their card with a pair is considered to be the high card a player may be holding at a certain time. However, a high card would also depend on what type of poker you are playing.
