Becoming a Music Producer
Every day I get another email regarding how to become a music producer and make thousands of dollars selling beats.
The answer I always give them is simple… It’s a lot easier than you might think! Selling beats does not require any degree or schooling, so don’t stop yourself short of trying because you’re afraid to dedicate your life to it.
I’m not trying to say that going to school for audio engineering is a bad idea! In all honesty, it’s definitely going to help your productions and you’ll learn a lot faster going to school than you would learning on your own. But you definitely don’t NEED school to sell beats online.
You need to think about how to sell beats online. This is going to be the easiest and most understandable route for you to take.
Sites like Soundclick, MySpace and Forums are the playground for music producers around the world. You can put your beats in front of low-budget hip hop artists internationally and sell them directly.
Every producer on Earth is trying to sell their beats to Rihanna or LL Cool J. As you might imagine, the competition for selling your beats to the big shots is incredible. Why think about doing the impossible? It’s a lot more realistic to sell your beats to hip hoppers who only have a few dollars per beat. Remember that low budget artists need production, too!
This takes advantage of Leasing beats instead of selling Exclusive Rights. Many producers allow the buyer to sell a measly few thousand copies of their album using the producer’s beats. For this service the producer may charge only $25-$50 per beat.
Sure, selling your beats to Birdman for $40,000 each might sound more enticing, but it’s a lot less realistic and the competition is much higher.
Imagine selling the same beat over and over again for $25-$50 each to an INFINITE number of rappers? You don’t even have to let go of Exclusive Rights if you don’t want to! This is the KEY to making money as a producer without having to go to school.
