Experimental Animation – A Step Outside The Box
Animation and its derivatives like Experimental Animation, is a field where few dare to venture mainly due to the common mindset that art is an inborn talent and perfected as a result of hard work. Animation is a derivative of art, where one makes drawings and paintings come to life. Our story begins with such an artist, true in form and work, but as most artists are- unique in his own way.
Our animator was not a very good with sketching and drawing but was a visionary in a sense. His perception and delivery were flawless. He entered this field in his youth, at a time when the industry was developing fast and the competition was severe. This young boy had to struggle a lot.
Akin to being the Shakespeare of his time, he went much unappreciated and rarely did his work raise more than an eyebrow in the circles he was exposed to. Nevertheless, he stuck to his guns and kept going, never waving or wandering. He held firm and played by the rules. He never quit.
His first piece was a simplistic two dimensional movie. The protagonists were just two and the movie came with a moral. Intended to be a childrens movie, it was not the best, but did okay.
Slowly and steadily his production picked up pace. He was now making, on a monthly basis, two to four movies. Even though quality to him was more important than the quantity of films he produced, they were still not always well received by everyone.
Five years down the line, He was somewhere in his line of work but was not fully happy. He had this perpetual feeling of emptiness. Sometimes he thought he had no future in this market and should just quit. This scared him. He was unsure and felt he was missing the hidden clues planted everywhere.
Ironically the next morning, he came across an article about branches of animation and how they compliment yet contradict each other. One particular style caught his eye.
The new technique was amazing and was exactly what the animator needed for his films. Execution of the technique was evident everywhere in the new clips and proved fruitful.
After the completion of his first movie with the style he was immensely satisfied. The movie was a full time one. It had a duration of one hour. Three days after its release in the market the picture was a huge hit already. The animator was successful and rich. Now he knew perfectly well what he was a genius at.
