So You Think You Can Remote View?
Two prominent parapsychologists Russell Targ and Harold Puthoff had introduced the term remote view or RV in 1974 but it was not very popular at that time. It gained popularity only in 1990s when Stargate Project was declassified.
This project was funded by the U.S. Federal government and the fund amounted to $20 million and it was aimed at determination of any kind of military application of psychic phenomenon. Due to lack of documentary evidence about benefits of this project and no value for intelligence community, it was discontinued in 1995.
A person conducting remote view is expected to provide information about the objects that are not visible or at a distant location. A remote view is conducted with the help of paranormal means. One of the most commonly used paranormal means that is used to conduct remote view is ESP or extra-sensory-perception.
Many scientific studies have been conducted to establish remote view. In some earlier studies that were not very sophisticated, there were positive results while the newer studies that are conducted in properly controlled environments, there are no positive results. Therefore, like any other form of ESP, these studies also constitute pseudoscience.
In typical cases of remote view, a person conducting remote view is required to gather information about unseen objects or objects that are away from physical view. A remote view is conducted using the paranormal means.
The study work of psychic phenomenon started in mid-nineteenth century. The studies conducted by some early researchers such as Michael Faraday and William Crooks involved carrying out focused experiments on people who were gifted physically. Many of these experimental tests gave positive results but these results were met with skepticism by the scientific community.
In 1930s, study on expansion of paranormal performance was conducted by J.B. Rhine. Standard experimental protocols were used along with some unselected human subjects by Rhine to conduct these studies. But being afraid of skepticism by scientific community, Rhine too was reluctant to make the results of his findings public.
Due to the above mentioned reasons, study of paranormal performance remained a fringe area of scientific exploration. The emergence of New Age thinking in 1960s gave way to muffling of earlier hostility and there was an in increase in popularity of human potential movement.
This was the ‘mini-renaissance’ and it led to renewal of public interest in studies related to consciousness and psychic phenomenon. By now, such studies also started getting financial support. By 1970s, there were funding available for moving ahead in paranormal performances.
