Gone are the days when wires were connected to toy cars to control them. Radio technology basically changed all of that. The Radio controlled cars of today are more than just toy cars, they come packed with enough power to rival real cars, the only thing missing is a driver.

The RC cars of today are run using either of two technologies, gas or electric engine. While the battery run cars were there even in the days of remote control, today they use rechargeable lithium or cadmium-nickel batteries. Gas powered RC cars use an internal combustion engine that runs on either gasoline or nitro fuel.

These engines are called nitro engines because of the fuel mixture it runs on which is comprised of methanol, oil and obviously nitromethane. These are air or oil cooled two stroke engines. Nitro Cars come in two variants broadly speaking. One is the DIY kit cars and the other is the RTR models. The former comes without any finishing and requires assembly hence providing easily replaceable parts while the later comes readymade and lacks the advantage of DIY kit cars.

All it take is to move a control stick or the servo on the controller to power a Nitro toy car. Unlike older electric models, these cars do not go into reverse on flicking the servo backwards; this only produces a stopping effect by powering the brakes. To get it going backwards, the reverse switch has to be used as with gears of an actual car. Nitro car engines are large and they are regulated by race bodies so as to avoid unfair racing. The most that an engine can have in size is 0.35 cubic inches, more than that is banned by most racing bodies. Furthermore, these two stroke engines do not immediately put a car into top speed, it takes time to build up speed thanks to the intermediate clutch action.

Nitro RC cars have to be better cared for compared to electric RC cars. This is because of the fact that they get up to higher speeds. A few RC cars are known to hit 60 miles per hour easily. It is because of such high speeds that collisions can really break apart these toy cars and hence they should always be handled with care.
