I am a long-time veteran of going to rock shows to see live bands play. I’m one of those types who don’t even need to know much about the band to go see them play, because I just love rock and roll that much. I have turned my love of rock into a career by writing magazine reviews of local shows. Since I’ve been going to shows for a long time, I know all of the ins and outs…and what is “in” right now, are cool t-shirts.

There is one thing that has never been acceptable through the years of rock music’s growth and evolution. By no means is it ever socially acceptable to wear the t-shirt of the band you are there to see. Since t-shirts are the most comfortable thing you can wear to a hot, packed rock show. Cool t-shirts were an inevitability.

The really upsetting thing is how hard these youngsters are striving to be the one wearing the coolest t-shirts in the room. The attitude doesn’t even make sense to me that they would even care to participate in such a frivolous activity. Doesn’t that go completely against the tenets of what rocking and rolling is all about? Be your own person and rebel, rebel, rebel?

It’s nothing new, though. Way back in the day when I was just getting into the local concert scene, I was no better. When I went to a jam band show, I would dress out like your typical hippy kid. When I went to metal shows, you would never be able to tell that I wasn’t a metal head like all the others. If the thing was wearing cool t-shirts back then, I probably would have jumped on the bandwagon just as quickly.

Now that I think back to those days of desperate acceptance in my youth, I wonder if these kids with their cool t-shirts will mature and feel the same as I do now. There will be some completely different kind of trend when they’re adults. I wonder if they will have the wisdom to let the kids be kids and to not be too judgmental. Much to my shame, I don’t thank that is wisdom that I possess.

Media has made entertainment so valuable to us that we make it part of our everyday lives. We have even gone so far as to take the things that should only be used as a distraction and turn them into funny t-shirts for us to wear. Popular culture has taken over, and it’s probably too late to ever go back.

Music is a major contributor to pop culture. Recording artists stop being just people who contribute their music to the world at large and become icons that people fixate upon. There is a very small minority of people who do not watch movies, which means that film is a very dominate form of media.
